no wait maybe… its cuz if they fail the LK again then he wants them to die again?
NO! I got it! its cause the LK had a great sense of humor and wanted his risen heroes to use heilium balloons to make their voices all squeaky during birthdays and other events to lighten the mood?

To be raised as DK, your lungs must be intact. Otherwise youll be raised as normal forsaken.
I think a DK needing to breathe is a good trade off given they get to avoid all the other horrible effects of undeath - like a rotting body.
Random made-up-in-20-seconds answer: Death Knights are more preserved than your typical undead, their bodies mostly being kept in the state they were as they were dying. This means they still have a functioning circulation system, and their body breathes autonomously even though they may not NEED to. And inhaling water and having that cycle through your veins might be messy.
Undead DKs are an exception since they became DKs after their “second” death, and are already in a rotten state.

Undead DKs are the only somewhat sympathetic kind of undead. They’ve been through that ordeal twice.
Isn’t there special magic Sylvanas employs to keep certain undead bodies fresh like hers and Nathanos’? I imagine the LK uses that on his DKs which 100% explains everything you think is an inconsistency on the topic.

Undead DKs are original Forsakens with intact lungs that were raised by the first LK BEFORE WOTLK. Those forsakens died, still with intact lungs, but were raised by Arthas during WotlK.

It seems they do, otherwise they would not drown.
Following the same logic, dracthyrs will never be DK. They breathe fire so their lungs are not intact.

Lorewise, undead do not need to eat, drink, sleep or breathe. They are only kept alive by necromancy.
They’ll never be DKs because there is no lich king anymore.
But why tough, would that rly break the game?
Dont you think other DKs can be created through other necromancy acts from powerful creatures, or the knights of the ebon blade
