All my work over the last 4-5 months was a huge waste because of welfare catch-up gear is better than old Mythic and almost as good as new Heroic.
-
As an AotC raider, if I grind the repetitive mind numbing dailies to 425, I get minimal benefit from the new raid. If I don’t grind the mind numbing dailies to 425, I’m letting my team down by being under-geared.

I can accept gear becoming irrelevant quickly between xpacs, but between raid tiers by putting in no more effort than doing the same mind numbing quests 100 times? In Vanilla there were some blues you wouldn’t replace until Naxx or ever.
I still remember trying to get a dragon spine trophy in sunwell on my rogue in BC
do you even know how many pearls you need to get just one item to 425? You would have to live in nazjatar.
Yeah, Blizzard really needs to go back to a point where some older found gears can be held onto and treasured.
There’s no point anymore.
Anyone remembers that tank shield from Ulduar10 Hodir hardmode that you’d hold onto until ICC? I member.
Boreal guard, my love, my muse.
There’s no winning this one.
If you don’t have the catch-up mechanics, then you have a situation like it was in TBC. Back then, if your guild had progressed to Tempest Keep, and you got a new guildie who wanted to raid with you, he had to go run through Kara and Gruul before he could join you there. And this made poaching a bit of an issue for lesser-progressed guilds.
Nowadays a person could join your guild, or just come back from a break, go do a bunch of quests, and gear up quickly enough to come join you in that latest raid. But this has the side effect of making all previous raids completely irrelevant. Hell, it makes all previous content irrelevant.
Anyone running Uldir?
Personally, I think given the choice, I would prefer the old system. It really is a case of the lesser of two evils. But I don’t make those decisions obviously.
Isn’t it like 200 or something stupid? It’s unlikely that anyone is gonna have a full set of 425 gear from naz… and then hope they are good stats
My past guilds were poached from a few times, but when we had to gear people up we ran them through old raids or dungeons or funneled gear to them in alt raids. That was fun.
Now it’s Blizz chasing the dollar by handing out welfare purps so Care Bears don’t unsub because the game requires real effort.
I shed no tears for you, Mr. AotC or gtfo.
When you think about the entire structure of the game back in its early days, it really is a different game now.
I mean, on a fundamental level it looks and plays exactly the same that it always has. You see your character on a screen, you see your UI, you press buttons to trigger abilities. But the entire structure of how you progress and gear is so different now. And it just makes so much content disposable.
I go back and do old raids for tmog. Maybe Mists on back? Depends on the class. I don’t think people go do recent raids very much for that. I just don’t think the attachment is there to more recent raids because of the way the structure of things has changed.
And now you just transmog the items immediately so the gear is totally unfulfilling in every way.
Frankly, at this point we need to start talking about why people still think that the weaknesses of the TBC model are worse than the weaknesses of the current model. There’s strengths and weaknesses to both, but TBC’s proved perfectly sustainable despite all its issues.
Right now, content expires like milk. It’s here and after a short while absolutely nobody’s doing it no matter what stage of character progression they’re in. Who’s that big slug that had an entire zandalar zone devoted to him? Who cares.
Yeah that’s exactly what I was saying. Content has no staying power anymore. Relevancy is relegated to the most recent patch and that’s it.
In TBC, sure you can view the older raids as a gauntlet that you had to run through. But it also meant that you always had a journey that was meaningful. You always had that next plateau to reach. And that next plateau was an entire new raid.
Nowadays you look forward to what? Another difficulty of the same raid you’ve been running? Whoopee.
Carrying a couple trials for opening bosses was rarely the hard part though. The problem was caused mainly by attunements, which no longer exist.
Uldir and Dazar both had easily carryable bosses early on, even on Mythic. We basically stopped trialing in Heroic entirely.
Sure the attunements were lengthy for a lot of things in the old days.
But I have to return to my earlier point. If I compare it to what we have now, I’d much rather go run these 3 new guys through the Ony chain, or Kara key, than the repeatable disposable stuff that we have today.
That’s what I’m saying though, is that guilds making reasonable progress already don’t need to run their trials and alts through the repeatable disposable stuff. You could literally take several fresh 120s in quest greens straight to Mythic Champions, and Jadefire and Grong were pretty easy to effectively 18-man awhile you slipped in a couple prospectives once you were established and the DPS checks were met more comfortably.
People had to run their new guildies through Gruul etc because the entrance of the current tier was individually gated by the previous ones. That’s no longer the case. That step is 100% gone. There’s not really any need for catch-up gear – at least not catch-up gear that extends all the way through Heroic raid. The loot pinatas are perfectly serviceable catch-up gear.
Running friends/gullies through attunements or old content also built cameraderie. My guild was still happily working its way through SSC while other guilds were pushing BT, and we were fine with that.
Some of the TBC heroics were hard and had some nice gear that was useful in raids.
Tier 0.5 was a nice system. Maybe something like that, a long quest chain requiring groups, would work better than grinding easy dailies.
Tier 0.5 doesn’t really make sense anymore when dungeons only stop being laughably trivial 10 levels into infinitely scaling speedruns. Don’t get me wrong, I miss it, but it doesn’t really fit into the current schema.
If you get lucky that Benthic might be BiS.
And this game is so simplified and stats so bland that gear being poorly itemized doesn’t matter.
The only crap itemization in this game now is crit for PvP. Beyond that pretty much everything is decent for raiding.
Dazaralor was throwing vers at everyone because everyone was already over loaded with crit and haste.
Wait, your ilvl is only 341 and you’re complaining about other people’s catch up gear?
