Why can't we quit WoW?

Interested to hear all the takes, I know I have my own but it’s just crazy a game with a monthly sub has lasted 20 years. WoW is special. <3

I’ve quit WoW multiple times for various reasons. But it’s a fun game so I have always found my way back home eventually.

First time I quit WoW, was in vanilla when I finally hit 40 and got my slow mount. Rode around for 5 minutes before taking a 6 month break.

I suspect the people still here for the most part want to be, and are happy and should stay, and I know a lot of people who’ve quit. At the same time I’ve met some people who should probably quit but haven’t for years. Quitting something you have good memories with is not easy. It’s the same reason it’s hard to quit long relationships. It’s kind of like that couple that should be divorced.

I will add that you can also take breaks and it doesn’t mean you need to quit if you want to come back later. The reason behind this is probably the same for on-again/off-again couples.

I will add that I don’t see couple-hood as a big part of life, but obviously, romantic partnership is not enjoyed one-way like WoW is and the impact on your life is probably greater than that of a game, and most people date monogamously but most gamers play many games. For these reasons, it’s not an amazing analogy, but it’s how I think of it.

Honestly, I can and I did it.

I left WoW for two years, I had no intention of returning and I went completely no-contact with the game throughout that time.

I came back because a friend insisted, and it took a lot of convincing and tempting to bring me back.

Judging by my experience, I think there are two main reasons why people find it hard to quit WoW:

1 - They don’t go no-contact. If you keep hearing about WoW’s new developments and additions, it will tempt you into checking those things out. One of the biggest punches my friend threw my way while trying to convince me to return was “Man’ari Warlocks playable”.

2 - Friends call you back to the game, which tempts you further.

Same reason addicts of other stripes can’t quit their preferred illicit or non-illicit substance.

For me, if I ever do quit WoW, it would mean I quit the MMORPG genre entirely.

Like idk about others, but even if I’m not playing WoW I’ll be playing another MMO for the time-being, or another type of game for a few weeks before I jump back into another MMO. Or sometimes even playing two at a time if there’s nothing much to do in one of them.

I’m with you on this 100%. The hope for a new MMO being as good as WoW has been a thing forever, but nothing comes close. Why I feels bad for all these people hopeful for Ashes of Creation. It won’t be WoW. </3

Why? Because they came out with WoW classic and I’ve found a really good guild. If that ever changes, I will quit for good.

Yeah, that’s the way it works for me too. The times I quit that weren’t work-related, I always ended up playing other MMOs. And really, it always made me end up appreciating WoW more.

A lot of the QoL stuff in WoW can be taken for granted ngl

I quit for 6ish months in Vanilla. Quit mid-Wrath and didn’t come back until mid-Legion. Quit at the beginning of SL. Quit last June. Will probably take another break later this year.

Cool guild and I still have stuff to do.

The art/music, the quick UI reaction time, the endless amount of stuff to do and collect, the little things that often go unnoticed, ability to play with or without anyone, interminable exploration and adventure, “the colors, Duke, the colors!”

Because as someone who has played a LOT of video games, WoW, for all its annoyances, is the best, most involved and vast open world game out there.
As long as they dont get stupid and remove old expansions, the game will always be the best.

I will say, considering all the addictions that people with addictive personalities can have, this one is probably one of the best (besides maybe addiction to work).

The only addiction I can think of thats as good as this is mine of buying so much silver and gold, lol…and thats just a big savings account.
if youre gonna be addicted to something, better that its a positive in your life than a negative.
