I have always been curious about this since classic WoW first came out in 2019. Why are we not able to play both Retail WoW and Classic WoW with the same account at the same time? Is it a technical issue? Security? I don’t believe I have ever seen an official response from Blizz of why we can’t.
There are two seperate versions of the game but the moment you try to log into one, you are instantly booted from the other. Now for many I am sure this probably not an issue or a big deal as most either focus on one version of the game. But there some of us out there that do enjoy and actively play both versions and its tedious having to swap between them at times.
Now normally this isn’t a massive issue, more of an inconvenience really but with WotLK Classic launch, lets just say having to sit in queue for 4-7 hours and not being able to enjoy being able to play Retail while waiting for these long queues really sucks XD
Just curious really. Would love for a blue response one day to explain why it’s not possible (or maybe it is but choose not to for x,y,z reason) Or if they have if someone could share it!

My assumption is technical reasons. The sub for retail also covers classic. Meaning the games are tied together and so is the account.

Why would you be able to? You can only log in on one character per account at a time. That’s true whether they’re both live characters or one live and one classic.

Why allow people to play two games at the same time for $14.99 a month when you can charge them $29.98 for the same experience?
It’s my perception that, when bnet creates an instance of WoW, it doesn’t differentiate whether it’s an instance of classic era, classic or retail. Since there was at one time only one version of wow (retail), they put a check in place to not allow two instances of wow to run on the same computer at the same time. So you get one instance, classic era, wotlk classic xor retail.
They don’t want people sharing a sub.
Same reason you can only be logged in once in retail.
Because Classic WoW is not directly supported. They specifically warned players that any content from Classic would NOT translate to Retail.
If you want to play nostalgia, more power to you. But in its own sandbox.
I assume it’s technical stuff they don’t wanna take the time to fix.
Though it certainly would be nice to be able to bang out my dailies while waiting in the absurd queue times.
That is really weird. I could swear last year or so I had both retail and classic open at the same time on the two monitors here.
Both as a security measure and enforcing Blizzard’s rule of no account sharing! (Which is also a security concern a lot of the time…)
All too often people sharing accounts get them compromised, and that can cause all sorts of things. As such, one account, one instance of WoW.
