Why can't survival be a tank spec?

I know it’s been talked about before, just wondering what people’s current thoughts are on it.

Lore wise, it would not make sense at all. Like when I think of a hunter I don’t think of someone running at an animal to scare it. Even people who hunt with polearms irl aint tanking anything they running

I think anything would be better than melee dps. Healer and Tank are at least different roles, but melee dps always loses to ranged dps.

Because not only does it not fit the Hunter identity but almost no one playing the class wants it.

Same applies to melee for the most part, but at least that fulfils the basic role of being a damage dealer which is what 99.9%+ of this class is interested in.

Hey look it’s this idea again.

You got melee hunters why not just stop while you are ahead.

They could just slightly up survivals ranged damage and make sure survival does the most melee damage and then all of life’s problems would be solved

  1. Give Survival baseline Multi-Shot, Counter Shot, and Concussive Shot.
  2. Make Arcane Shot and Multi-Shot interact with any talents and gameplay mechanics that currently interact with Raptor Strike and Carve.
  3. Put Counter Shot and Muzzle on a pseudo-shared cooldown. Counter Shot triggers a 24s cooldown on itself and Muzzle. Muzzle triggers a 12s cooldown on itself and Counter Shot.
  4. Have Wing Clip trigger a 5s cooldown on Concussive Shot. The reverse is not needed due to Wing Clip’s Focus cost and melee range requirement.
  5. Tune damage and Focus costs such that Raptor Strike and Carve deal more damage than Arcane Shot and Multi-Shot. Maybe also remove the CD on Carve, or add a CD to Multi-Shot for SV only.
  6. While you’re at it, give Survival the ability to use melee attacks with any melee weapon equipped, Dual Wield included.

Im not interested in SV tanking, but it could be doable it just wouldnt fit the way dps works and the way encounters are designed.

Kite tanking or CC tanking would be super cool, except the DPS would hate you for moving the boss around so much and Bosses are usually immune to CC. Pet tanking is not exciting for most tanks (youve already got a lot of pet tanking in brewmaster)

I think most other ideas for SV tanking would just not feel like a hunter anymore.

cause its barely a dps spec. go home.

The real answer is because the game’s raids relies on tank swap mechanics and survival hunters would be able to do those solo.

They could work around that. Have the Hunter and Pet share a combined health pool and mirror debuffs to each other, for example.

I played survival from the moment it was available all the way up until they changed it to melee. In fact, someone from Blizzard I remember in some interview said they changed it to match what they felt best matched a “survival” hunter. Let’s be real… A survivalist is not going to grapple to a bear and punch it in the face.

I really miss what this spec used to be, the black arrow + lock n load procs and constant explosive shots were so satisfying!

I just wanna surviiveeeee. Now, all of you, attack me.

It’s doable, and may even be stupidly fun, but it’d be almost antithetical, thematically.

On that note, actually, almost ever one of the mechanical or fundamental concerns that people will likely toss up against this be met (most of them easily, even).

If that takes some minor tweaks like your pets actually moving above normal speed… oops? Guess I’ll just have to settle for my Attack command actually having a purpose outside of incredibly rare situations now.

Honestly, though, I’d prefer a utility-heavy DPS specialist over a tank. If a tank were added, I’d prefer it to be a Harrier spec alongside Survivalist, Marksman, and Beast Master.
