Average men have what’s called testosterone. This means men on average are more aggressive than women on average. Averages I repeat.

However it could be pointed out that Blizzard would have been better served by establishing additional IPs that cater to the E for Everyone Crowd as opposed to the demographics (regardless of gender etc) of the WoW community.

Because from a business standpoint, it’s stupid to limit your market to half the population by exclusively designing for their gaze to the exclusion of all others when there are no barriers to the other half of the population also being your happy paying consumers. Video games aren’t urinals, that are useless to women because of biology. There is nothing inherent to video games that makes them uninteresting or un-fun to women. It’s not like our chests get in the way of our keyboards. It’s not like a food preference, or choosing to be vegan.
So if you’re designing something that can by all reasonable measures be fun for all genders, why would you decide to say “Will men like this?” instead of “Will people like this?” when you’re putting it together? It’s leaving money on the table.
Bad example. It’s more like, a burger restaurant decides to call itself “LEFTIES”. It’s a burger joint where somehow everything is designed to be used with your left hand - the food, the order kiosks, tables, implements and condiments, payment terminals, etc. People who are right handed aren’t barred from going in and ordering whatever they want and interacting with the staff and the food and the restaurant features with their right hand, but they probably feel a little uncomfortable doing it. If they really like they food they’ll probably still go and put up with the minor inconvenience, but a lot of people will likely figure it’s not worth the hassle.
It might be an interesting hook for a niche restaurant with a handful of locations at best, but something like that is never going to become the next McDonalds. By designing a general-market product to a specific audience along arbitrary lines that don’t have to have anything to do with the product that they produce (“people who are left-handed” instead of “people who like burgers”), they’re limiting their market and their potential profits.
Now imagine if, at some point, some marketing person back in the 1980s decided that burgers were for people who were left handed, for some reason. So if you like burgers, most of the time you need to deal with inconveniences of using your non-dominant hand. It doesn’t really make a huge difference unless you get really invested in the principle of it, but if you really like burgers you still go, and a lot of the time you’re so used to it you just ignore it, but every once in a while the sheer arbitrariness of it will sneak up on you, like you’ll go to use the restroom and go up to the sink and it only activates with your left hand and you’re like, “Oh geez, this TOO? Why?”
It’s not like you made a specific choice to be right-handed and also like burgers. And even a lot of left-handed people aren’t perfectly happy having their assumed needs catered to, they’re like, “I wish I could get my right-handed boyfriend to try eating here but he figures it’s not ‘for’ him so he just won’t try” or “Wow, I actually like to pick up my napkins with my right hand even though I’m left-handed, why is this like this?”
But a hardcore component of the left-handed burger-eaters, they figure that burgers are for them, because all of the burger advertisements play up how it’s great food for left-handers, and obviously everything there at a typical burger restaurant is built for their convenience and enjoyment, and it has just always been that way. Left handed burger enjoyers become left handed burger employees who become left handed burger designers and executives, who don’t see any need to accommodate the desires and needs of right-handed people, or even make them less blatantly uncomfortable, because burgers are for left handers. They just always have been. That’s all they’ve ever known.
Maybe a couple of small, niche burger joints open up that just flip and mirror the same design, but with right-handers in mind. They stay niche and small, because it’s the same problem only in reverse - the market is limited when it doesn’t have to be.
World of Warcraft isn’t a niche indie game looking to appeal to a small, specific audience. It’s a general-audiences game that can and does appeal to people across the lines of age, gender, socioeconomic background, political bent, etc. They want to have an appeal as broad as possible, to make as much money as possible. There is nothing inherent to MMOs, or video games, that makes them only appealing to men, so why would they shoot themselves in the foot by focusing their design efforts on something that will appeal to what they assume is their core market, but makes vast swaths of their other paying customers feel like they’re intruding on a space made to specifically not cater to them?

I would posit your real issue isn’t that players who are male don’t want girls in their game. I think it’s probably the fact they don’t want you that has you all flustered.

Good analogy, but I think the discription of hands is off the mark.
I know I have seen World of Warcraft go from a game where you coils use both hands, up until a point where the game catered to those who didn’t want to use hands at all, and instead wanted the food placed in their mouth by others that the real downfall began.
Now there are so many hand fed that they turned their concentration from eating to asking why the staff can’t be more presentable to their needs.
Well, there we have it. They admitted it.
