White guys aren’t the traditional gamers. They where pushed in media as such but they never actually where. There was/is and always will be a diverse group of people who play video games. Whether it’s middle aged women or a Jamaican teen it’s always been diverse.
Following a false assumption on who plays video games and creating discussions on game design based on that makes bad games.
AAA gaming has in many ways followed down the same path Hollywood has taken. In essence, making a AAA game represents a significant investment such that it has to safely yield huge profits to justify the risk. The end result is, just like Hollywood, game companies try to appeal to as wide a swath of customers as possible.
This also explains why, just like Hollywood blockbusters are pretty much just sequels, prequels, and remakes, companies like Blizzard haven’t had a new property in over a decade.
I actually did just google their menu, and it seems they don’t just serve burgers. The OP clearly used this in his failed analogy. They serve hot dogs, sandwiches (including all veggie options) as well as shakes. Seems like they are more diverse than the analogy was calling for.
Although I will say I’ve never been to one that sold sandwiches, and I’ve been to a few.
I can already see you’re going to bend this however you can to make yourself sound right, despite clearly not knowing much about your competitors as someone ‘in the industry.’ His anology is fine:
There you go. Edited so now the analogy is true to life.
Listen, we;'re done here ok? You analogy is false, your argument is invalid. You;re not talking your way out of this one through semantics. We’re done.
ah but wouldn’t it be grand if you could afford to get , L.E Moddesitt, Mercedes Lacky, Lois McMasters Bjold, and S. M . Sterling all together to come up with a new world and stories for a new game …
Thats something I’d pay to play…
“You’ve demonstrated the flaws in my points so now I’m going to stick my fingers in my ears so I can’t here you anymore. We are DONE because I said so.”
The demographic that I am referring to is the one that wants to make significant changes in the game at the expense of what made it a truly fun game in the first place.
No one trying to label as against gender equality or diversity is making any points if they knew me they’d realize how dumb they look. I embody more diversity than 90% of the people trying to drown me out simply cause I don’t agree with their opinions.
There were plenty of females that played and enjoyed WOW well before the modern era, so “females” are not the demographic I am talking about when I say they would be better served elsewhere.
What I am talking about is the fact that representation for representation sake does not make the game better and it actually detracts from it in certain situations. I will admit, I fully support the addition of all the human races recently, the ability to appear as whatever race in game you like should have been there from the start, so again, this is not a “real life racial thing” either. I would argue that some of the additions to the fantasy races have gone too far, I personally think the “tiger striped worgens” are ridiculous, and they were an obvious pander to the people that have no desire to keep the game intact.
You don’t get to change the goal posts after the fact to try to win an argument on the internet. Sorry. False analogy. But if it makes you feel better to claim you won an argument on the internet then have at it. That’s absolutely adorable darling that you feel that way.
I mean, those who cant enjoy the game for what it is always seek to change the game so they can have their wishes at the expense of someone else’s.
It is like that passage on the count of mount cristo the girls says that the guy was angry because the poor boy was happier with the whistle than he was with his poney. She adds: “I wont be your next poney”.
The main objective with all those crappy threads about “demands” are the fact that people cant stand someone else liking an aspect they dislike.
“You cant have fun with mission tables, pet battles and/or what ever else because I dont like it”.
I’m referring to ethnic diversity in real life which doesn’t mean I have to want diversity in every facet of everything or in this case in a game that is fundamentally based off of parameters that cannot simply be changed on a whim without detracting from the game.
In the case of World of Warcraft I think many of the aspects of the game have moved too far from their foundations and would benefit from some realignment with the old game
Since pet battles and transmogs became a thing WoW has a huge amount of female players.
Just like an office when it becomes majority female it is downright unfriendly to male participation. I really have no idea why people think WoW is for boys. It has been pretty bad for a few years now. The boys still playing it are clutching onto their copium respirators hoping this all blows over when it won’t.
Bluzzard failed to recognize this dilemma in both product and offices and are now paying a heft price tag on it. Bobby’s Activision has no such problem. CoD is not a girl’s game and never will be. If WoW hadn’t been turned into a mog and pet hunting game it would have retained more boys and so less girls. Less of a controversy to worry about.
Blizzard could focus sales on one specific group. But they wouldn’t, because they’re good at business and money. There’s so many angry big boys getting themselves in a twist that they aren’t “allowed” to make an exclusively boys game for big boys. When in fact people are just telling blizzard, “Hey, we’re interested in this game too.” And blizz in turn are saying, “Sweet, join the party. Here’s some stuff you might like too.”
TLDR:
Focused sales = less money. Broader sales = more money
It depends entirely on the product. Coke can get away with this moreso than say, Cadillac who makes a product you interact with and ride in all day.
If Cadillac decides to market their luxury sedan to 20 year olds who want a sporty ride they are alienating their core 60+ audience. That’s a fact.
What’s happening with their MAUs right now is the same thing that happened to Cadillac when they made their luxury sedan sporty. They are shedding millions of MAUs and will likely continue to shed MAUs.
To put a finer point on it this is an MMORPG. The product is intended to immerse the player in it. If two sects of players want different things you have to make one unhappy to make the other happy. You’ll never win them both over with heavy story narratives that favor one over the other. That’s a loser.
Its like this, imagine World of Warcraft was a software for paleontologists, it attracted paleontologists, and it became popular among that group because it gave them everything they were looking for dinosaurs and dinosaur environments and whatever else goes hand in hand with paleontology. It was SO GOOD, that some people who weren’t paleontologists started playing WOW.
Over time, more and more non-paleontologists have started playing, and rather than accept the beauty of the world they joined, which was geared toward paleontologists, they fight tooth and nail to add superfluous additions to the game. They don’t like the fact that T-Rex eats other dinos, so they complain until the devs make him a vegetarian - EVEN THOUGH that is not accurate.
Over many years, even more players that don’t have any interest in paleontology have joined the mix, suddenly, we now have mammals roaming around with the dinos during a time that predates their existence, we have saddles for the dinos for people to ride them, even though this shouldn’t be the case either. Rather than doing what made the game a great paleontological tool the devs got caught up in worrying about how it much money they could make off of it, and so now the game makes no sense, it no longer caters to paleontologists at all, and the people are still arguing for more changes that take it further and further away from what it was.
