Yes, actually. Not all pirates used swords, and being a kul tiran doesn’t automatically make you good with swords.
In fact, the primary reason they used swords is they were easily replaceable and noone wore armor on the high seas because it would take tons of time to put on, and with it on, you’d sink to the bottom of the ocean. Usually the only skilled swordsmen were the officers and captain.
