Why can Shamans use Axes and not Swords?

But they were also hot. That’s why people hated them lol

If you look at the original Shaman races in classic, it made sense. Swords were carried more for melee, and Shaman, while still having melee, are more about spells from a distance and totems. Maces, in any form feel more natural.

To separate them from the inevitable spellblade type of class of course!

Shamans in a rpgs are generally meant to be more primitive. In EQ for example I think they were only allowed to use clubs and spears if I remember correctly.

Shamans are primal so want clubs (maces and hammers), fist-weapons and axes as weapons. Swords are more refined, hence are more aligned with Paladins.

Btw the weapon triangle is spear> sword > axe > spear.

Spears outrange swords, swords are more versatile, better made, sharper, and easier to maneuver than axes, and axes are close quarters, literally break spears in half.

Why can Shamans use Axes and not Swords?

Thrall was very specific about this in the Shadowlands opening when we were still in the Maw. After he threw his axe at Helya there was a quest where we had to go around and find him a new weapon. He said specifically that he respected swords as fine weapons but felt they didn’t have enough heft.

It only made sense for orcs and tauren shamans. But now with kul tirans and goblins and the such swords make sense. A stormforged kultiran shaman would use a sword.

They should just open it up to swords.

main weapon for shaman in eq has been always spears the epic 1.0 is 1h spear

but the shamans of eq are more tribal spirits curses , not based around calling the elements.

The logic theyve been using is “would this class be a master of this weapon type”. Shaman spend so much time communing with the spirits that they would only be using weapons that have a low skill cap. So, no spears, swords, or other similar weaponry.

Instead, their weapon choices consist of heavy smashing weapons such as fists, clubs, and axes.

Warriors are literal masters of weaponry, so they can use every single type except warglaives in classic, and in retail the same, minus ranged weapon slots being removed.

Paladins are warriors of the light, so same thing.

Why do shamans use metal objects at all? They’re the wood and bone type.

Only because of game design reasons. They didn’t lock individual weapons to classes like ffxi did, or lock the class to the weapon like FFXIV.

Instead its multiple weapon types to multiple classes.

Hammers are better anyway. That “thunk” as you strike home? Isn’t the “Doomhammer” the Shamans legendary?

Cause its not “Shaman like” to use a sword over a axe. Old classic WoW ideas that need to be redone. But I don’t even mind it. Less people rolling on stuff is good in LFR/LFG raids for everyone. Cause it gives more people a shot at gear imo.

Yes and it was originally a 2h before shamans were cursed with double thumbs

Didn’t Thrall use it one handed though?

Because Stone Cold said so?

Thrall is like the Shaq of Orcs.

That logic is deeply flawed, you think a kultiran pirate of the sea that communes with the storm would use a mace over a sword?
