There are basically three reasons (one alluded to earlier).
-
Monks are the least played class, so statistics wise, they are going to be less represented.
-
When all the youtube videos were making their tier lists, they consistently placed WW monk low. So, it didn’t give people at lot of incentive to pick it up as a new main. Curiously, they would often state it was a good spec, but it simply lacked the damage in comparison to other classes.
-
During the pre-patch, WW Monk was still low, so it confirmed for many what the youtube experts were stating, and so, when SL launched, there weren’t many WW monks out there. I even remember a thread being made asking WW monks mains to report as a kind of motivation for the fact they were playing it.
This first raid though, has really made so many youtube predictors look silly. They were all screaming priest, especially shadow and disc, and now shadow isn’t seen as THAT impressive, and there’s various disc prists who are actually playing holy!
Some other classes have had a similar experience. Back in pre-patch, so many were playing their OP frost mages, and now they are screaming for buffs.
All youtubers were placing disc and druid as the s-class healers, and shaman was ranked A, B, or even C, cause their only strength was doing stacked healing. Well, we know how that prediction turned out.
Youtubers said the only good spec seen for Monk was brewmaster!
In Sum, few monk players in BFA plus youtubers ranking Monk low in their tier lists all led to everyone deciding it wasn’t worth it. NOW, you listen to their CURRENT tier lists, and they often say “WoW, what a shock! WW Monk! Who would have thought?”
Shows how good they were at predicting, and how at the end of the day, it’s all about how they do in a raid environment.
If the numbers hold, we may definitely see an increase in Monk Players, and that really wouldn’t be a bad thing. I personally LOVE WW Monk, and was disheartened to hear all the negativity pre-SL, so really happy to see it doing well.
