They can equip shields, so why do they not have a tank spec?

When Blizzard revamped the armor in Cataclysm, they should have eliminated Mail and put Shaman in Plate and Hunters in Leather. Then, they could give Shaman an Earth style tanking, though it should probably be a 4th spec, like Druids have.

It took them long enough to learn to ghost wolf. Learning to transform into a tank takes years and years I imagine.

They could somewhat tank in vanilla but weren’t great at it. Shields are kind of an remnant of that but are now just stat sticks

But they could way back time. Enhancement Shamman could with the right build be a off-tank. However, this was fun, so blizzard had to kill it.

cause blizz decided we can’t cover ourselves with stones, and use that as tanking armor.
It’s long overdue to be honest, here’s my random suggestion from that other thread:
Personally I would love to be “liberated” from “having” to play a Druid if I want to play a class that can tank and also do ranged 
It’s time, and patch 10.0/back to Azeroth is the perfect opportunity to finally make this a thing. Give a tank spec to Shamans, the more variety in the game the better imo

Shields not means that they are Tanks, for Example like Paladins Holy. Also there Tanks that don’t have Shield is Death Knight Blood who use Two Handed Weapon and Druid who use Staffs and Demon Hunter who use a Weapon that not have Shield and Monk don’t have Shield. But in Vanilla, Shaman can do Tanking, but it is not really Great like other Classes like Warrior or Paladins.
They should’ve been a tank since vanilla

They couldn’t figure out how to do it with the old talent trees.
If you look at some of the earliest attempts, they were leaning in that direction, but as they started refining the class, they started removing those things that would have let us properly tank.
The fact that we can equip a shield is just a remnant of a bygone era.
I think Rogues, Hunters or both used to start with a shield. Makes you wonder.
This. Deleting the mail armor class just makes sense.

id be happy if shamans became tanks. just bump them up to a plate class. with that you can bump hunters to leather and remove mail, caz the devs donno what “mail” is suppose to look like

Yes I know this is a noob question. I remember the phone comment and would cost you a raid tier but I missed the “small indie company” remark.
Honesty, I think it was really Weird, where Hunters most Non Transmog look like Leathers, and Shaman look like Plates. But they are Mail. Mail Armors means, that Armors are look like Rings Chained
it would require making a whole new spec out of nothing a major revamp
druids always tanked just as a variation of the old feral spec, thats why it made sense to make a unique tanking spec when the three tree system was removed.

also they would have to go back and rework all the mail armor

i know that! that’s why i think it’d be cool, but you know blizz… they don’t wanna try new things with old classes anymore… aside from butcher specs people like…
