It genuinely feels like the years of being a fan are being thrown to the wayside.
The Spirit of Competition is one of the VERY few things that exist in the game as a way for players to show “hey, I was there!”.
Hell, Tyrael’s Charger was EXPLICITLY detailed as the first annual WoW sub reward, to try and keep players subbed during a content drought. That promise was broken, effectively giving a middle finger to all the fans that supported WoW during that time.
It feels like the Devs are just giving up on the game, and giving up on the fans with moves like this. Why even play the game at all, why pay money, if they’re not going to honor your time? Fans of the game should be rewarded, not given the shaft. Little things that players can be excited to have and share with others, instead of just saying “nobody’s experience with the game matters”.
I mean, WoW is coming up on 19 YEARS online. And yet anything that could possible acknowledge long-time fans is just being rendered meaningless.
Imagine having a t-shirt from a concert where your favorite band played. It’s something you could wear, and if it caught someone’s eye, you could be like “yeah, I love this band! I saw them tour back in '08!”, something to be excited about, something that feels special. But if it were just some generic t-shirt that anyone can buy at wal-mart, it ceases to be “special”. It becomes just a shirt.
Cosmetic things like pets, mounts, tabards – those things EXIST for that sole reason. They are a reward to players, either for promotions, events, activities, whatever, so they can be excited about the game. Where if someone sees you with a pet and asks you how you got it, you can share the experience. And ideally, have new experiences that new fans get rewards, so they have something to make them feel special, too.
