Why are you afraid to play a healer or a tank

I would like to preface this by saying this is a safe thread, and i will flag anyone that is attacking anyone, and i encourage those who want to be heard to do the same.
That being said i want to understamd why people are afraid of taking on the healer role and as an aside a tanking one. Ive played this game for about 19 years, and have dabbled as a tank and a healer. Im a mage main had have been for years, but since re trying other classes to freshen things up ive been dabbling with a resto druid and a disc priest. Ive been a blood tank before as well. But i want to understand the roadblocks that people have.
I mean i jusy had my 4th flawless run as a disc priest while leveling, and possibly thatnks to the others i had and advising them at the start that i was new to the role, no issues wher there… admittedluly o could of said to my last tank to pull bigger but my nerves are still in play.
What im asking is despite the lfg comminity neing a go go go mentality. Whats stopping you?

I can see from my experiences being a healer and now in the new expac having done lfr that there is a lot of crap going on constantly, as if everyone who plays the game is adhd hypertensive with a minimum output of 400 apm.

The screen is awash with random crap, youre always dodging random crap and trying to catch up to that one guy hiding 3 yards outside of your range at all times.

It can be too much for a lot of people.

I love healing, but I don’t like healing groups that completely depend on you to make up for their mistakes.

Id much rather tank.

healer has to move raid/party frames towards the middle of the screen and tank has to backpedal.

enough for me to pass on both

I honestly have no issues jumping back into the tanking role, but taking abuse for 15 straight years has made me realise that tanking for my friends is much less annoying.

For now I tank for those same friends on cata classic.

Tank? Easy - I dont like to lead and that’s usually an expectation.

Healer? Have you seen the mechanics in today’s wow vs yesteryear’s wow?

  • don’t step on this.
  • aoe damage
  • step on this
  • get out of that
  • dispell this
  • dont dispell this
  • move and heal
  • dont heal yet
  • use big cd now or group wipes

And mind you…this plus more mechanics is all at once.

No no no. It’s a video game, to release stress, not add to it.

It’s not fear exactly, or at least fear is an oversimplification.

I enjoy tanking. I enjoy controlling the pace and taking a beating for my team.

What I don’t enjoy is being expected to know EVERYONE’S role, everyone’s look-out-for mechanics, the exact % route of a run, and then usually being held accountable for the success of a run because a very good tank can both compensate for poor DPS and poor healing. A good DPS cannot compensate for a poor tank. A good healer cannot compensate for a bad tank either with today’s mechanics. 630+ healer cannot out heal the damage of 3 packs and an inexperienced tank, for example.

Its what’s expected of tanks that makes the role frustrating. So I will tank for friends because they know what to do and they know I know how to tank.

I play to relax, and tanking is simply not relaxing unless I so grossly out gear the content that it literally doesn’t matter if the dps or heals are straight up asleep.

Dont play healer because it just seema stressful especially if you are puging. As for tanking i do tank but i usually wait until i learn the routes while dpsing.

fair enough, but then again, (it was just a dungeon) gi didn’t have to do any of that… and you can have spec specific UI’s… so your excuse kinda falls flat. Sorry, Tek… I came off kinda short there

Tried heals once. I was terrible. 1 dungeon and was out

Healing feels bad. Healing surge hits for 250k and people have 5 mil+ hp lol.

Abusing the flag function, and encouraging others to do the same?
I thought you said this was a ’ safe thread '?

That aside…
I don’t think people are ’ afraid ', people are just tired of the BS that comes with playing the role.

I have to heal, drives me nuts when folks are dying and I can’t help.

I was in Korrak’s on Shadow Priest and had to leave so I could spec Disc the other day.

It’s some gamer OCD I think.

The pug community can be very unforgiving, and healers/tanks are the most visible in a group. Since tank has to set the pace and healer has to keep up with it they get the most criticism. People jump into pugs for a quick dungeon run and the chances of listening to some salty dps rant are enough that some people, like me, just don’t want to bother and will rarely tank for pugs.

Yeah you can ignore people but some days I just don’t want to have to go there.

I wish i could start a guild with you on retail. you sound like you have the heart, but raandoms beat you down… I have seen the same thing, but it was back in wrath… and it was the entitlement of an entire guild that brought an amasing pally tank to quit, so i know where you’re coming from.

Ive done both.

Tanking bores me to death. Literally. I was legally dead thrice now and had to be revived, lmao

Healing I love more than most things in this game. Nothing funner than keeping a group alive thru lots of incoming damage while trying to beat a DPS or two on damage.

Players ruined that with their garbage attitudes, bigoted, racist trash in chat and kicking someone every third dungeon for no good reason.

I play a healer and a tank. I find both to be rough for the following reasons.

  1. Tanks don’t understand how to utilize their healers toolkit. If you are running with a disc priest, a lot of their healing comes from doing damage. Yet you are constantly pulling huge packs which make the disc priest spam mana hungry heals which end up slowing the group down due to the time outs the healers have to take to drink ect. This applies to all other dps through heals like healers.
  2. Players not utilizing their defensives/cds/kicks properly. Because you are such and such ilvl doesn’t mean mechanics should just go by the wayside unless you are basically impervious to damage/dying.
  3. I will often ask before the run begins, if anyone is unsure of mechanics. If not, I am happy to explain. I am either met with silence or the favorite “2500 io alt man we good”. Then proceeds to not cc/kick/use cooldowns ect.
  4. The general lack of communication in dungeons. We have discord channels for crying out loud. In game voice chat. Yet few want to use it. It would make life so much easier and the rate of success so much higher if people would just communicate. These are just some of my many issues with the player base this season :frowning:

what went wrong?

Currently the 80s that I play are an even split.

2 Tanks, Prot Warr/Prot Pally with a BDK that just hit 80 as well.
2 DPS, Elemental Sham/Afflock
2 Heals, Discipline/Mistweaver

All three roles are fun to play and there is nothing more intimidating about one than the other imo. Assuming you are trying to play well as DPS rather than just float under the radar that is.

what’s the difference between healing DPS, and dealing DPS … heres a though… if 250k Heal keeps a member up for 3 seconds… thats 3 times what they would of got otherwise.
