Why are they called the 7th Legion?

I loved the 7th legion’s story in BFA, it put to light a lot of things I was pondering on during the faction war such as Void Elves, the Pandaren etc.

But it just dawned on me right now that despite there being a 7th I don’t recall any 1-6th legions from stormwind

If there are what would they be? and if not is “7th legion” a reference to something?

Legions 1 through 6 were eaten by the horde. By the 7th Legion, the alliance decided to try wearing armour.

From the wiki it says: * The first theory is that it is a tribute to the game Myth by Bungie. In the original Myth , the most veteran unit was the 7th Legion . At a critical moment, it attacked the forces of the Undead from behind, securing the first victory for the Humans.

1-6 could be just normal navy, whereas the 7th maybe the the battle hardened best of the best, the queens personal guard or something like that.

Maybe it’s like Seal Team Six. Make the enemy think there are six other elite special forces units hiding out there ready to take you out at any moment.

The 7th Legion might be just a reference to the US Marine Corps (USMC). Highly efficient for first strike missions while not as numerous as the regular Army. And then there’s SI:7 which is obviously just MI6 since Mathias Shaw likes to play the James Bond game. I’m not buying it though, Shaw. Try harder.

“Do you know what happened to the first six legions? Do you want to find out?!”
-High Commander Halford Wyrmbane

In-game jokes aside, it doesn’t seem like anyone really knows if there are or were Legions 1-6. As for the quoted line above, that is one of the lines Halford Wyrmbane says when you trigger his “annoyed” lines by constantly clicking on him.

In real life this happens all the time. For instance you have probably heard of the 101st Airborne. There is an 11th and 17th airborne division as well.

It’s just a feedback loop. Your division does well, so they give your division resources and crazier missions until you become a notable unit.

The 1st through 6th legions may have been destroyed and struck from the rolls or they may just be Alliance Soldiers you see all the time, but they aren’t as noteworthy.

On that note, check out the 442nd infantry unit. Respect.

I believe Blizzard’s official stance on Legions 1-6 was that they were comprised entirely of gnomes.

Because they 8 the 9th Legion.

I thought it was a take on the US Navy’s 7th Fleet. Since this is a “sea” expansion with securing a fleet being a main theme.

They’ve been around forever.

You are a terrible, terrible person, but take your upvote.

As to other forces, all I could find is a speculation page on wowpedia that the forces that accompanied Arthas to Northrend may be the 1st Legion;

I’d wager this is the most accurate too… still though like someone said earlier jokes aside I hope we get to see what the other 1-6legions are like.

Actually now that you mention it wow, I didn’t know maybe the other legions are from armies across different kingdoms within the Alliance with the 1st being from Lordaeron.

:open_mouth:

The 9th Legion was made out of gnomes!!

Hopefully not Leper Gnomes!

Wowpedia(dot)org is your best friend.

Anyway, Legions 1 through 6 were just that, legions in the army, with the 7th being their “specialized” force, or the marines.

Much like the Horde’s counterpart, the Honorbound renamed from Kor’kron (after these forces were decimated during the civil war against Garrosh), they are the elite forces of the army and members of this ‘faction’ are usually in the royal guard and other small strike forces.

I also like to ask why the Horde has a group called Honorbound, still trying to figure out where the honor is.

Ask legions 1 through 6. Oh wait.
