Why Are there still Weapon and Clothing Restrictions?

RPG Genre is notorious for it’s clothing and weapons restrictions. This comes down from the Old DnD game rules. But is seen in most RPG games and literature to this day.

Rules that say; Warriors should not wear cloth armor. Mages can’t wear Plate armor and must only use staffs as weapons. Each class is forced to use specific weapons and armor
or they are considered not viable. Yes each class has several options, but there is only one real primary choice that makes the class actually work correctly.

The restrictions come in the form of lets say a Warrior can wear cloth armor, but to the detriment of class performance. etc.

What about Wow’s Arthas Menethil the Lich King. Wasn’t he all about wielding some
extremely powerful magic? Yet he walks around in massive plate armor and carries a two handed sword. Kinda of the complete opposite of the rpg traditional rules?

Why Gandalf in LOTR not only carried a staff. But he also carried a sword and could dual-wield both.

Keep in mind that this is a fantasy realm. Conan the barbarian ran around with only a sword and a loincloth. After he became king he only wore cloth and perhaps chain-mail.
But Conan could wear anything he wanted and fight with whatever weapon he choose to use. Why can’t we?

Why couldn’t Merlin wear plate mail. So he was a magic user, so what? In a battle wouldn’t a plate outfit come in handy?

Why should a paladin be forced to wear plate armor on a hot day. A fashionable cloth outfit would be nice. Specially if it was color coordinated.

Would it not be great for a priest to use a musket. Or a Warrior to fight with a staff? How
about a rogue that can wield a two handed battle axe. So I ask; why not?

Admittedly Wow gives the classes some wiggle-room with selection. But still has restrictions as to what each class can wear, and what weapons they can use.

So I ask; Should Wow do away with these outdated rpg rules and remove the restrictions?

No, there would be a bunch of balancing changes needed if people could wear any armor type

I agree for transmog purposes. Although not necessary gearing/stat wise. Since it sort of invalidates the point of different armor classes (armor stat) and balancing based on those things.

tons of armor in this game that looks like something else. lol.
I was looking at a CLOTH item i can make with Engineering that required eight LEATHER mats, lmao.
Tons of cloth and plate sets that look just the opposite.
Get rid of the transmog restrictions except maybe the racial sets or where is maybe required.

Different fantasies with different interpretations simply put.

I’m all up for unrestricting mog restrictions since we’ve crossed the line where we can mog cloth on to plate and plate to cloth, years ago.

i’d imagine part of it is to keep true to the fantasy of these classes.

you should be able to identify a caster based on the way they dress in a fantasy world like this…same goes for heavier armored classes, etc.

i personally like the restrictions…but druids should be able to wield wands! c’mon now!

I would think, in a realm of fantasy, anything heavier then cloth armor would get in the way of raw spell casting.

I say “raw” because we’re talking about individuals (Mage, Warlock, and Priest) who don’t use physical weapons, instead a variety of offensive and defensive spells.

Also, they need to keep their mind in tip-top shape. Wearing plate mail would tire them out fast.

Nah. Old Republic did that and it’s honestly just boring homogenization.

I know you think you are being edgy and original posting the “big questions”, but you are just rehashing the same dross that has been posted before ad nauseum.

I am just posting what I think some people might find interesting and perhaps the resultant discussion is entertaining.

That you think you know what I think is extremely ludicrous since it is impossible to know what anybody posting in a forum is actually thinking.

Apparently you have a personal vendetta against me. Most of the time you reply to one of my post is to say something negative and insulting to me. Why this hate you have against me? I have no idea why you are always so toxic at me???

If you dislike my topic posts so much, please feel free to not read them.

Hey cleric no edged weapons for you! Unless you’re a cleric of war or something, then it was okay. D&D was so weird.

Also where did the idea that Paladins must only use hammers originate? Why would they?

warcraft’s Uther…that’s what the current paladin is based on

I think it’s because the mace is symbolic with judgement, which is a big part of their fantasy

It’s a balancing thing. But as far as Tmogs, I don’t think there should be such restriction. Let my mage be covered in plate.

Mages and Warlocks (two types of wizard) can both use swords.
Warriors can wear cloth and mail if they want to (or even just a loincloth)
Merlin can’t wear plate because he’s claustrophobic
Paladins can also were cloth if they want to
Priests are conscientious objectors, they don’t want to use guns
Warriors can fight with staves
A battle axe would snag on the ground/walls while a rogue tried to sneak around.
Any more questions?

Sounds fun and intuitive, but I think of all the new code. If a mage is in full plate, he can only blink this far, but if in leather, can blink that far and so on. That’s just one ability for one class. Then weapon speed for melee. Do monks and rogues slow down considerably if wearing all plate? Speed up if all cloth? So much new info would have to be added under the hood, that I just dont see this happening.

He was also Middle Earth’s version of an angel, not some simple wizard.

You can transmog off all except your pants in this game, so you can do that already.

You can transmog this already.

Somethings just don’t make sense in rpg games. Just look at my pretty angelic wings. But can I use them to fly with. No. I have to get on my flying mount to fly around.

All I can do with them is transmog them om my cloak. Oh well.

I only agree regarding transmogs, but not the actual gear with the stats.

Uh oh.
