I like that there’s a lot of flavor for classes but there was a previous prune in the past to eliminate button bloat and it seems we’re back at it again. Some classes have so many abilities that you need quite a few keybindings. Now to make everything so much more obnoxious and annoying every single trinket in this expansion (Might be an exaggeration) feels like it has an ON USE effect. Why are we leaning so hard into these trinkets now? It feels stupid to have two extra keybindings for just trinkets when I have 4 other cooldowns/rotationals etc to consider. These trinkets don’t even feel good to use, some make you cast for like 2 seconds or longer to activate interrupting and throwing off your rotation etc. Can we cut back on these trinkets? Trinkets should feel powerful and not a frustration just put it on and get amazing procs passively.
I definitely prefer passive trinkets.
I have too many other actual class abilities to worry about I don’t need more on top.
But I’m sure some people enjoy the on use extra abilities.
It does seem like every trinket I get is on use though.
Thats how it feels for me so far, everything is on use.
Well that’s only half the problem. There was also constant whining and crying in Shadowlands about “borrowed power”. So the message from “the community” was clear.
- Stop giving us all these new abilities, it creates Button Bloat - and -
- Give us new powers but never take them away, we hate borrowed power.
Of course when the devs got these two simple requests from “the community” they ignored them. My guess is that the eye rolling caused them to get dizzy and fall over.
Some specs have more useless damage abilities that they don’t use in their rotation than they do damage abilites that they do use in their rotation.
If that isn’t useless bloat, I don’t know what is.
Trinkets have always had the potential to be overpowering (XYZ trinket has more throughput than every other upgrade except the weapon slot). At least if it’s on-use, I can control when to call that OP effect.
Two on-use trinkets only take up one button, so I don’t see the problem (unless ANY action-bar use would upset you but then why even have spells/abilities if that’s such an issue?).
Dual-Use Trinket Macro - shift, alt, or ctrl for Trinket-2

As a casual player, clicker and WASD mover, I could use with less buttons to click for sure. Is it ever going to happen? No. Because wow has a large competitive community, an if you tick them off, you lose you cash crop.
What I do with on use trinkets to save another button to click is to make a macro button to pop both at the same time, an if they have different CDs, I can click it to pop the one that refreshes first.
A lot of them can just be marcoed into your burst cooldown since you want to line them up with your cooldowns anyway.
I do not the the on use, then use again trinkets
So are you saying everyone uses the same rotation? Seems one player’s “bloat” could be another player’s “go to” power.
I vastly prefer passive trinkets myself.
I don’t like having to muck around with macros and junk, I just wanna play the game, and I don’t need to worry about keeping a stupid trinket on cooldown or what-not.
The fact that people are advising one macro such trinkets into cooldown abilities (something else I avoid when/if possible, which is why I love the fact that Ret can spec out of Avenging Wrath and bake it into normal abilities they use for shorter duration), points to the fact that the trinkets do not add anything to gameplay.
Having a trinket macro’d to another ability is basically the same thing as having it as a passive trinket. So, why not just make them all passive, then?
There’s also a PvP-esque trinket in Ringing Deeps that merely increases your movement speed for a few seconds and it’s offered quite often on World Quests… it sucks to see that trinket as being the only one that’s an upgrade in I-level, because what you really want is a trinket that’s going to make you more powerful, not one that makes you run for like 5 seconds or whatever it was.
it’s because they are engaging. i hate them.
You mean… aren’t engaging, I assume?
On-Use trinkets are not engaging. You just slap a macro to tie it to another ability you always use anyhow. Set it and forget it. In fact you probably already have a /use macro and when you slot a new trinket in, you don’t even notice it’s there.
Might as well be a passive trinket at that point.
If they didn’t nerf those abilites into the ground so that they weren’t a DPS loss to use I might agree with you.
ret paladin has wings. at high end you’re probably supposed to think about when you use them.
i don’t. i use on cd.
I took the talent that replaces Avenging Wrath with a passive effect that makes the wings come out with other abilities, but for shorter duration.
I see my wings every few seconds for a few seconds at a time instead of 15 seconds every couple minutes. It’s more consistent DPS AND I don’t need to concern myself with when to use it.
who cares , I just macro them
i got the passive wings too. which really hurts because I had macroed “behold my final form” to my wings.
Eeeew.
I hate say/chat/guild/yell macros with a passion lol
I like the on use ones tbh. Especially a good tanking trinket, you can time it along with other defensives.
