Title asks the whole question. It feels like the majority of the guilds in the list are just dead.
Prolly cause a lot of people try to start one, realize managing a guild is at least a part-time unpaid job and give up
That’s like asking why places that are always hiring are crap places to work for
It would be nice if the guild finder required someone to at least click a button from time to time to keep their name in the list though. That way dead guilds are purged out of it.
God, i work in a field in high demand and early on recognizing these and dodging them was a whole learning curves.
Agree. They should maybe have some sort “ready check” version for Guild leaders once a month that leader would need to confirm that they are still open for recruitment to have their guild continue to be listed on the guild finder. Right now a lot of dormant guilds are indeed still in the guild finder. By having a monthly confirmation, Blizzard can have the community help with keeping the guild finder more up to date with active guilds.
Unless it’s bugged and isn’t actually working that way, it does have a 30 day timer on the listing you put up in the guild finder.

For one thing, a lot of people make guilds just for themselves and family and or just for guild bank space…
Another is that aside from raiding and mythic guilds most guilds became irrelevant when people could just use LFR and other ways of finding groups…
I just list a storage guild of mine to invite alts to.
Once you put an advert up it never goes down. Those adverts really need an expiration, make it months but still make one. Youll find ones from like 2018 still up lol
Doesn’t appear to be working that way because there are guilds that are advertised as “reforming in preparation for shadowlands expansion” and similar stuff that never have anyone online.
Idk if it’s bugged or if people just don’t update the text in there.
After many years, this is the first xpac that i returned and no one was online in the guild lol
Blizzard needs to make new pvp content/maps.
cause people start guilds and never really come back to um and so it just dies off. guild finder just shows all of them. blizzard literally needs to delete guilds where the GM has been inactive for 6+ months or at least delete them off the guild finder.
Entirely possible it’s both. I don’t update the text in ours very often, since I’m the one that mostly handles that because we keep the guild listed for pet people to find us without having to whisper someone in guild.
To be honest, that whole system is seriously lacking in a lot of very fundamental ways. They need to revisit it badly.
Listings should be like the AH… have a time limit and then expire.
Sometimes we have an idea for a great guild, then we discover recruiting is hard work and nobody cares. And I guess the names must remain to remind us of our failures.
My Idea: [Regulators Mount Up] A guild all about mount collecting. We could chat about who is camping what and where, collaborate on finishing achieves that result in a mount. Completing " Lord of the Reins" achieve results in promotion to Officer rank. Ranks would have cool names, “Invincible” for Officers, (or TLPD) new members would have rank of “Rivendale’s Deathcharger” and guildleader would be called “Raven Lord” crap… I don’t have that mount…
Great news. They do.
It might be both, I’m not really sure.
Mine’s mostly alts and a few friends with their alts and a few members who have joined along the way and stuck around.
I update ours as needed in the text but don’t ever really have reason to since settled on it.
Do refresh recruitment every 25 to 28 days.
It does, every 30days.
I sure don’t think it does there’s so many guilds in there from forever ago and I know for a fact there’s some in there from people that I know who ain’t even been subbed forever.
