Cutscenes look worse than a badly dubbed D-list movie for international viewing. Or is it in homage to some Kung Fu Hustle?
Please don’t stain that masterpiece by putting it anywhere near this mess of an expansion.
The flying portion was a little silly and looked so unnatural (yes I know flying people aren’t natural) I felt like it was a pixie getting chased by someone with a rocket coming out of their bum.
The ingame character models were not made for cutscenes. They don’t have the facial structure to mimic speech, but blizz wants to compete against other mmos that were designed to make cutscenes with character models, so they are doing this. They must have some pretty heavy groupthink at their company to release it in this state.
Kung Fu Hustle is a masterpiece.
Are you implying that a PS2 quality cutscene with lip synching below the quality of a 90’s adult-film anime is somehow underwhelming in a supposedly AAA title in 2021?
Tyrande’s 10 seconds of Dragonball Z were pretty nifty, pitty about the rest of it though.
Technically it seems like they’ve put a lot work into improving them.
So far the only one I thought really had problems is the Night Fae Maw Assault on the bridge. Looks really unfinished, just blocked in. This, stop, then this, stop, then this… not blended together.
Incoming white knights who will claim it’s the state of the art “unique artstyle” which WoW has and it’s good enough to be on PS5 in 3…2…1…
That scene with Jaina was some serious PS1 rendering
The lipsyncing is a bit weird but whatever. They aren’t that bad and get the job done. I’d rather pay attention to the scene in it’s entirety rather than pick out all the faults and miss the story.
The cutscenes themselves aren’t bad imo. I thought they all looked nice. It’s just what the characters are doing in them that can sometimes be bad, like Tyrande choking someone who doesn’t even need to breathe.
I didn’t really have an issue with the Tyrande vs Sylvanas fight scene. Maybe their lips were off? I don’t know. I didn’t notice any issues with it.
Or well there were a few others I don’t recall standing out.
But that one with Jaina? I have some serious questions about that and how it was released in that state.
Best in-game cinematic of any mmorpg or online game, most of the other games don’t have voiced cinematics or cinematics really. Riot does some really good work outside the game in some of their trailers but blizzard really is leading the entire industry still.
I look back to Overwatch being released and even back in Durnholde keep that scene where thrall knocks out the blacksmith for trying to snitch on him was pure gold. If anyone knows an online game with better cinematics, trailers, or teasers point me in that direction.
With that in mind that whole cinematic with the dark lady was a bit too scooby doo for me. Someone had to have seen that cinematic and just told them it doesn’t have the polish of a monty python skit. But imagine if they did just go all the way and embraced the ridiculousness.
They’re still not trying yet?
Go figure…
September 2005 me says hi.
For every Illidan killing Xe’ra we get a couple scenes with in-game models. They make the actual important cutscenes special.
It was a good cinematic for what it was but the problem is the story kills the entire thing. Literally nothing happened. They honestly could have left the thing out entirely and it would have achieved the same result.
You right my bad. And also this group of video game makers probably aren’t even culturally aware enough of that movie anyway
This. I mean we’ve come far from say the end of the DS raid to today but it’s still pretty bad.
Though I do find it kind of amusing for the folks out there who say they prefer wow’s look when compared to say FFXIV then they go on about how many the wow cutscenes look.
I get no wanting to put the effort or budget into say something like the Saurfang v Sylv cutscene in EVERY cutscene but Blizzard, you could do so much better. Put some pride into your work.
On the bright side… they perfectly captured my look of sheer terror at the part where Exodia (cough cough Terragrue) steps out of the portal…
The only thing that bothered me is the close up on Jaina’s face in one of the in-game cutscene. It’s like Jaina’s face didn’t agree with her. IMHO they should not zoom on a character’s face during an in-game cutscene if it’s not properly rigged for it.
Otherwise I’m pretty satisfied so far, no hate from me.
