I was trying to Google what words are acceptable with the WoW forums and this showed up.
I believe “damn” and “hell” are safe but other curse words are not. So strange
or if they are not harassing you, just ignore them, when did we start letting swearing hurt our feelings. this is kinda the experience of being an mmo. and being heavy handed with bans is how you damage a brand. that one simple word that someone doesn’t like can get an account banned. some people need a bit thicker skin.

Stealthbot in 1998 had auto-ban words.
this is 2024, and this technology, along with space ships of atlantis, the ark of the covenant, and the stargates, has been lost to time. it is far too technologically advanced to auto-mute websites and other terms, just like it is functionally impossible to train AI to identify chat that is advertising websites, or being racist, and hiding it from clients server-side, or flagging racist commentary for review.
Maybe in 2052, when one of your children, tired of being regaled with stories of the “olden times” of battle.net and third-party chat bots that regulated the channels dig up that ancient code… then we can bring it back.

Necro aside, it’s because preventing such things doesn’t actually matter to them, at least not as much as maintaining a virtuous air.
You could argue them not implementing a filter to catch such words and block them before they’re actually shared in chat is an example of their lacking virtue, but the masses are tech illiterate and most probably don’t even realize they can do that, so unless you raise an effective stink about it they’re content, as are most corporations, to let the status quo be as long as they can. As long as doing nothing is cheaper, they will continue to do nothing.
