Why are respec costs higher than original vanilla?

We were chatting about this ingame, does anyone know why respec costs are much higher than they were in the original game? It absolutely did not start at 1g. I seem to remember it starting at 1s and then ramping up fairly quickly to 1g and then after that it got crazy capping at … I want to say 40g. At the very least, it gave you a little time on the low end to try a couple things. There’s a real “locked-in” sense to talents now, like if you choose wrong well then screw you that’s what you get!

Did blizz think the game would be insta-assaulted by gold sellers so they raised it or something? Does anyone know?

EDIT: I never played on a private server, so not mixing that up

EDIT: this went into an off-rails discussion about what costs actually were in vanilla, reminding me that I think they did tinker with cost early on, so be warned, memories will vary

Pretty sure it has always started at 1g and capped at 50g

Respec should be 10s to start, then 1g, upwards from there. After the first respec though, it never goes back to 10s. The lowest it can go through decay is 1g. That’s how it were

well it didn’t start at silver this time

It started at 1g. Originally, it didn’t cap and no decay. Not sure when that came about.

it absolutely capped, I knew people who had to respec one to two times a week

the cap is 50g if i remember correctly. Looks normal to me.

It always had the 50g cap, but you’re right that it originally had no decay.

They really should bring dual spec to classic.

It would really add to the game and encourage more people to PvP…

yeah … I think that veers off the course, it’s “not classic”

the limitation really can be frustrating sometimes, especially for healers but it’s one of those things that defines the time and those limitations created more interdependency between people in groups (guilds) fostering relationships and so on, so difficulty in this case made for some real upshots

I remember the same thing actually xD

I remember the starting cost was 10s… and it would quickly ramp up

There’s some confusion because Vanilla actually started at one gold, but some private servers started it at silver, be it 1s or 10s. This was a decision made by private server admins that didn’t directly adhere to the “Authentic Vanilla WoW” idea. Back in actual Vanilla, it started at 1g.

This is correct. I remember making a mistake in 1.2 and realizing that I didnt have the money due to what I had been doing at the time with my money (idiotic “must buy the best”).

I did something similar. I started on 1 Feb 05’ roughly 2 months after launch. I hit level 15 and realized I wanted to spec down beast mastery for leveling, but I had bought some AH gear. I had to then go to Westfall to farm the 1 gold for respec. Learned a valuable lesson about the AH while leveling lol.

You should really go play retail.

Never played private server, I don’t have any other experience, it definitely did not start at 1g by the time I played, which was a few months into the game. I remember complaining inguild about how fast it climbed. I don’t exactly recall but it seemed like the first jump was whatever it was and the second jump was more than that. Like 2x -> 2.5x/3x.

Well you’re remembering wrong. It was definitely 1gold. I remember being like “Seriously? A whole gold!?!?”

What you’re ‘remembering’ is the way most private servers tend to do it.

Never played a private server either, and I could have sworn the first one was silvers, then it went to a gold.

I also remember a time in the early 2000’s when I could alter gravity and semi-float, and I remember Mel Gibson being the actor in Cast Away, so I’m gonna go ahead and believe the people saying it was 1 gold.
