I mean, really?
It’s the community forum and you’re LIMITING customer engagement!?
Whose hare-brained idea was that?

The great heart shortage of 1743… a tragedy. How could we forget such things that made us who we are today.
I honestly can’t think of a good justification. It just seems necessary
Ooh. Rhielle is applying.
They probably limit likes so my tinker threads don’t get too popular.
Blizzard is using a prebuilt system called Discourse. It does not like giving us likes.
I am a sad panda. And NEVER SAY NO TO PANDA!
After 21,000 likes you’ll earn Heartfinder and be able to grind out more hearts a day.
I like liking stuff! Unlock the like limit!
i must be a hater… i don’t think i’ve ever hit a “like limit”
(and i thought i “liked” a lot of posts!)
On the old forums they described likes as intended for pointing out a helpful or useful post if I remember correctly. I think like if someone asked how to get to org from STV and someone gave an accurate and good answer it should have the most upvotes.
They have used likes to pick out questions for at least one Q&A from what I remember (Lore mentioned it either in writing or on the video).
It could just be discourse and how they have tied likes into trust levels. If I’m not mistaken, you have to get so many likes for trust level 3 and you have to keep getting likes to keep it going? Which makes it slightly more valuable than just “sharin’ the love” if its true.
All of the forum admins I have ever personally known if the like count/ratio/trend/etc could cause some posts to to be shown over others.
Like bombing to ensure posts get traction and individuals get higher ranks within the forum community has occurred in every forum I have participated in where such ranks exist.
Like this forum does with it’s trust levels.
Search for “Trust Levels” I think it will be the third hit.

Evidence that the entire trust system is dumb.
Perhaps. Given that I would not advocate for a free for all system what alternative would you offer?
Maybe not limiting options for community engagement?
I often use likes as a “hey, I read your response…and I acknowledge it” not necessarily like or agree with it.
Just my weird habit
Because if people are too sweet we’ll all get diabetes.
So free for all? No way to moderate how posting works other than a large staff of dedicated people? Let the forum descend into the rancid cesspool that has, without fail in my experience, resulted every time?
Come up with an actual proposal for a better system that addresses these types of concerns and I’m sure you can get any number of people interested in it. I for one would be fascinated to see such a system that does not require a large staff to administer it. Your statement is a slogan not an actual proposed solution.
I am betting the thinking went something like this. We want them to only use likes on the best posts, not just spam them everywhere so we will limit them. What significance the number of likes on a post has is beyond me but I am guessing there is a time saving/easier aspect to it for blizzard.
This is indeed part of the thinking, or at least I believe so.
See my post for further information.

To avoid having people make threads for the purpose of trading likes?
The like system does nothing to moderate the forum like what rofl? It’s not like the highest liked posts in a thread are shot to the top. Similarly the trust system simply punishes those who go against the zeitgeist of the forums whereas blatant trolls have the ability to post images because they are found funny by forum regulars.
Perhaps you are correct, I have had some…negative experiences that trend in that direction.
As a counterpoint I have seen this precise type of argument used against every sort of forum control schema.
The onset of much more reliable Deep Learning systems for doing forum moderation is starting to have some interesting affects on these types of things. Their focus on actual content of posts and patterns of behavior is starting to show some real promise is crushing “the in crowd forum cartel” in many places. I look forward to seeing how the one that blizzard has been using in the overwatch forums and chat works for world of warcraft.
And again, as always, I welcome you to come up with an actual proposal for a system that works better that does not boil down to “free for all” or “hire another 400% of forum mods”.
I would genuinely be interested in a system that work better.
