Why are pet battles awful?

Feels like a system that’s been unchanged since it’s conception. Do they ever plan on taking these anywhere? Pet dungeons are impossible without spending money, PvP battles are worse than Overwatch.

What money are you having to spend …most of the Pets that you can do the Pet Dungeons with are found in game free either wild…or quests or boss drops…most of Blizzard store pets or Trading post pets are not used or are not good enough…Ikky …comes from a quest line… Anubisath idol from old world boss drop…Unborn Val’kyr wild caught…Emerald Proto-Whelps quite outstanding …caught Wild…

It hasn’t really been fundamentally changed since its inception, 10 years ago. It has been expanded, with more pets, more battles, more rewards, more achievements, but not fundamentally changed - and I’m happy for that; the most likely result of a fundamental change would be a spoiling screw-up.

(OTOH, compare that to Chess, which hasn’t fundamentally changed for about 400 years. Or Go. Doesn’t make them “awful” games.)

Pet dungeons are easy. Too easy, IMO, but that’s a different conversation.

You have done the work to get about - what? 30 - Blue 25s ready, and you have not chosen the most useful species in the most useful breeds. It has always been my view that you can complete all battles (except Family, ofc) in the game with about 30-50 pets, if you choose the right ones. But saying that the dungeons are impossible when you don’t have the roster to do them is like claiming that the current raid is impossible for a group with just-dinged Green gear.

You need to put in some work before you’re ready to tackle the content.

Learn the most useful species and breeds and their proper use. Start here: https://www.wow-petguide.com/Guide/58/Most_Used_Pets Then acquire and level and Rarify them. None of them require money, or even much in-game effort. Get 100 or so of those in your roster, learn the strategies from https://www.wow-petguide.com/ and the dungeons will be too easy for you as well.

OK, I’ll give you that one. Another separate conversation tho.

I would disagree with this (since we’re talking about other conversations). They’re easy because you have your cheatsheet in the form of Xu-Fu.

Granted, when Wailing Critters first came out, I didn’t even understand the concept of some attacks being strong or weak against certain pets. (That didn’t happen until I was looking for help fighting Nitun in Pandaria. I was using Undead, and someone else wanted to know why I was using Undead on a Critter, since Critters do enormous damage to Undead. But since Nitun uses dead pets to heal himself, Undead were the only ones he could not exploit in this manner.)

For example, in Wailing Critters, Skum is a Beast, but that doesn’t mean that any Mechanical will be able to do the job, since he puts out the damage, has a vast health pool and strong defenses.

I hadn’t done Wailing Critters in a while. And I nearly lost to Skum because I wasn’t relying on the usual strats and tried to make up my own. And using newer pets like Microbot and Ichabod.

Against Hiss, I employed Microbot, but to my utter disbelief, Lock On x2, Supercharge and Ion Cannon did not finish him off.

Yes, the beginning fights in Wailing Critters are easy if you know what you’re up against (any combination of Beast, Flying and Aquatic, so just any old Mechanical, Magic and Flying will probably do the job). If you know what you’re doing, just about anything you try will work. But Skum, Hiss and the Spore defy easy solutions. No, not just any old Mechanicals will defeat Skum or Hiss. And just any old Aquatic will not work against the Spore.

While I might buy store pets for fun (and never end up using them in pet battles, cuz the in-game ones are simply better for that), my spouse can do the dungeons just fine by targeting some choice in-game pets. Without spending a dime.

Yes, pet battles are old, but there have been expansions to them over the years, and always more pets to collect, if you’re into that. I actually find it fun to come up with strats that aren’t from xu-fu. Some are more challenging than others, but that’s the fun of it.

Um, no. Really, really no.

I have a solid roster, and I know how to use it.

New Family achievements are the only brief periods I have fun with battling in the game, since I can go around and solve them myself. It rarely takes me more than three attempts at any Family battle, though the few hard ones can be really hard, especially if I’ve gone down the wrong road in the first place.

But I seriously don’t need other people to make strats for me. I do use them, and appreciate them, especially for levelling strats, once I’ve solved them myself, but I very rarely look up other people’s strats in my round of solving. I did just once this expansion. (Delver Mardei- Elemental)

Battles without a Family requirement, and single-opponent battles like Skum, Hiss and the Spore are very easy, and there is no case where I would have to look them up - except maybe something like Swog on PTR when it was waaay overstatted. The devs nerfed that before release.

When I first read this, I assumed you meant the subscription fee. And I was thinking, “Well, what did you expect? Blizzard has to make money, too.”

But are you seriously suggesting that in-shop pets are indispensable? I would beg to differ. I can’t remember the last time I used any in-shop pet. For anything. And I’ve beaten all pet dungeons, including the Celestial Tournament, without ever using an in-shop pet. I have them, but they’re just vanity pets. Most of them just aren’t very good.

The closest one I’ve ever come to needing one is the Chaos Pup, but he’s not really a in-shop pet. He’s the premium you get for downloading a free authenticator.

Have you visited Xu-Fu? I would venture to say that there are strats for every fight in every pet dungeon that doesn’t require an in-shop pet. Anyway, I suspect those in-shop pets will eventually be available in the Trading Post. One of them, Pandarean Monk already has been.

That is one of the things I like about XuFu, they really strive to make strats around “easy” to get pets, easy also meaning not in the shop. For example, when Zaralek Caverns dropped the newest strat for Squirt came about, under a minute with a wild caught pet, it makes that grind all the better.
