Why are full servers having layers dropped?

If a server has a queue at any time it should not have had its layers dropped. Specifically talking about Grobbulus here. I don’t understand the decision making here.

Layering was a temporary setback that always was planned to be phased out. Layering is counter to the spirit of vanilla.

These new que times do blow though =-C

LOL You stuck on a maxed server with layers. You’re going to deal with as layering is being removed in preparation for Phase 2. Want to avoid queues? Take the free transfers.

You had your chance to transfer (and still do, actually). You don’t get to keep layering forever simply because you refuse to move. If you’re going to stay like everyone else… then you’re going to wait in queue. You’re either part of the problem, or the solution. There’s no riding the fence.

There has been considerable player demand (in the forums) to remove layering as soon as possible.

So I guess it is inevitable that, when it gets removed, someone complains about it.

No matter what Blizzard does, and no matter when they do it, someone will complain. After all, isn’t that what the forum is for?

Because a few months ago, the Classic ‘community’ throw a huge fit over the layering feature and Blizzard had to make a promise to them that layering will be gone before phase 2 arrives in order to calm them down.

Phase 2 is coming soon and Blizzard is now committed to remove layering regardless of the consequences due to the ‘promise’.

They can’t release Phase2 with layers cuz of exploits is what I heard, so they need to get rid of layers before Phase2 and they need to release Phase2 soon cuz most people are 60 now or close to it…

Dont take this advice. The majority of the people that took these free transfers to low pops regretted it after.

Yea it’s funny because I am getting away from a low pop server rn (waiting for guildies to get raid ready) to lvl a character on grobb. I am just wondering why some servers are still layered but Grobbulus has been put off of them. What are the metrics involved? does anyone know outside of Blizz?

It seems like population is the driver.

laying isn’t about server queue capacity the layer is about having too many people in a zone at one time. at launch everyone would be in the exact same starting area, now players are spread out and / or fallen off it can be disabled because the initial launch / hype died down.

Actually they promised to remove it in a few weeks back when they announced layering. Before the backlash about it. If anything they are being extra nice keeping it in as long as they have.

Blizzard let you know MONTHS ago their would be severe queues and has offered multiple waves of free transfers.

Got a source on that? People on the forum dont make up the majority of people playing.

It has to be done at some point. I’m guessing there is an internal decision made about when to do it.

Here is an example as to what I would do if I was making the decision.

Monitor realm population, if the concurrent realm population is within 10% of the maximum single layer population during peak weekend time, then put it on the list. If it stays this way for 2 consecutive weekends, remove layering. If its on this list and new players are joining and it exceeds the 10% and continues and upward trend, remove layering immediately so new players will be queued and pick a different realm.

This has new players pick different realms to help populate those, while hopefully preventing free transfers to desperate players that regret it a week later on their mid level character. A 350 player queue is easy to deal with, 3000 players, not so much.

They just removed it from my realm, and every zone is full of activity now.

Simple. Blizz did not expect Classic to attract as many people as it did. Even before launch the first batch of starter servers had so many name reservations on them that they warned of issues and opened up new servers to try and distribute the population, then they launched even more servers right at launch and then again shortly after that to deal with the influx of people.

From there they expected a lot more “tourists” to only play for a few weeks then move back over to retail, and I am sure there were quite a few that did just that, but it was not as many as they expected.

Since then there have been free moves from the highest pop servers, but with layering on there was no incentive to take them up on that offer. No server queue’s, plenty of farming spots, not as much competition. It would have taken forever for natural attrition to get these servers down to a reasonable population to be able to remove layering without causing other issues.

So that leaves us where we are, layering has been removed from most of the servers at this time, and from what I can tell by the queue for Herod, the number of layers has been reduced for those that still have them. The end result they are looking for is a wider distribution of the population so all layering can be disabled well before we hit Phase 2 and with layering still on players had no reason to consider the transfer option.

So the simple solution was to remove or reduce the layers, cause a queue to hopefully convince people to take them up on the free transfer.

If there is no queue, there is no motivation to transfer off.

Obviously it’s great as the class and race combo that is most sought after in raids, but for those that play classes that are in lower demand it’s very difficult to find a new guild. Guilds will not transfer unless the queues interfere with raiding and even then it would have to be a few weeks. I will GLADLY log in half an hour earlier for the queue if it means avoiding a PvE server that is DEAD on the Horde side.

Because layers are terrible and never should’ve been implemented in the first place. I love seeing the world packed like it is now.
