Orcs and Humans are the foundation of Warcraft.
Dwarves and Tauren are the factions you wanna hang out with. They got brews and herbs.
Undead and Night Elves are the edgy friends who might actually want kill everyone.
Gnomes and Trolls are the homeless bum factions.

Tauren are a nature race and Gnome is all about mechanical technology. Also the size difference is a nice juxtaposition.
Orc are a race that overcame its demonic corruption and has turned to its Shamanic roots. It’s society is based on honor and a fair fight. Undead are the exact opposite - they overthrew their enslavement but embraced their undeath. They have turned from all that is natural and have no qualms of using any advantage in a fight. They have no concept of honor like the Orcs have.
Humans are flighty, overpopulated and rather short lived. They change the world around them to match their needs. They are the most diverse of all races in manner of culture, language and faith. Night Elves, the immortals (well, used to be) growth their world to match their needs. They very readily seek out the natural world and are one of the most reclusive of all races. In addition, they are one of the least diverse with a nearly uniform outlook and faith.
Troll are a scattered bunch that are extremely tall and quite chaotic in their behavior. The seem to be less concerned with honor than their Orc neighbors and they accentuate the dark shadows and mysticism. Trolls live in simple homes with simple technology and aren’t extremely hierarchical. Dwarves in contrast are very rigid in their hierarchy. Dwarves bury deep into mountains to build megalithic enclosed cities. Dwarves lean much more toward law and are likely the most honor bound of the Alliance.

I got an Orb of Deception on my Troll, in the first half of 2005. I swear that originally Trolls turned into Gnomes at the time. I was surprised to see everyone listing Dwarves for this, but recent testing has shown it accurate.
