Who remembers "DF" as Darkness Falls

Good times back in the day.

Bruh I loved DF.

See, this is what these modern war mode players don’t understand about world PvP. World PvP isn’t just “PvP, but in the world”. It’s about living a high-risk high-reward lifestyle. Trading the comfort of chill carebear leveling to play the game in a constant state of paranoia for greater rewards. World PvP is about playing a version of the game on edge, where danger lurks around the corner.

That a player of an enemy faction might be lying in wait behind the bend made DF leveling or farming that much more thrilling. I loved it.

And on the note about DF itself, I loved the OG versions of the visuals. I hate the Darkness Rising remake of it. That purple mist that was used to obscure the draw distance created such an ambiance. Also, the Red-Eyed Sith Lords with the beam swords in the OG version are just so much more intimidating than the Necroknights with the flaming swords they were replaced it. I understand that Necroknights are more fitting for a “realm of the dead” but I preferred the quasi-demonic vibe of the OG Darkness Falls.

I loved rushing the zone (to clear it out) when you regained control of it… never knowing how far in you would have to go before you turned a corner smack dab into a whole host of enemies. (sometimes my PC “loading” gave an ominous clue) It was really priceless.

I agree with your opinions on the “upgrade” of the zone.

Fair enough. I did love that game as well.

Dread Fortress from SWTOR. The raid featured Dread Master Brontes as the final boss and is in the same area as Dread Palace.

I didnt stick with SWTOR very long at all, but I will give you a thumbs up for your “DF” memory!

Darkness Falls was not a good movie. I mean, it was ok up until the end but the monster reveal just kind of ruined it.

Ok, I think I will log my Friar in and kill some stuff. Good so far…

not me, never played it, but every time someone says “dragonflight” this is front and center in my mind

I can’t look at DF and think about anything other than DataFrame. Can’t mix work feelings with WoW time… sadness.

Always a classic! The cover alone is iconic. I could have gone that route too… I didnt get beyond The White Dragon though.

Albion zerg inc!

I really miss playing Thidranki, the level 20-24 battlegrounds. Those were some of my fondest memories of pvp in an mmo.

I guess “DF” can be all sorts of stuff! Maybe I am a “DF” for thinking otherwise!! LOLOL

the first three in the series are absolutely my favorite, but there are some great stories later on, and in some of the side-story books (ie, harper hall)

it’s been at least a decade since I’ve read any of them, maybe it’s time to revisit!

Or how about when your side had control of it but that “gank guild” would log in later to kill people.

Oh the dreaded Zzzzzzzzzz over your head and you knew you would be running back after death.

I didnt play much on the lower level BGs. But i know people liked building a killer spec in those lower level ranges.

Raven Gaurd on my server. They could take on 3 normal 8 man’s at a time. Insane tactical coordination.

Oh man I loved Thidranki. Nothing like crushing folks with a level 24 Twink. It was also so novel leveling through PvP at the time compared to other MMOs where PvP had no real reward. Even WoW was a step back initially with no real point to the PvP combat and the sort of broken memetastic PvP balance (it boggles my friggin mind that people think that Vanilla is some sort of sacred cow - coming to WoW after playing other MMOs I appreciate WoW’s leveling experience and combat system but it was definitely not even close to ‘sacred’).

That’s part of the fun. The asymmetric nature of DF lent itself to a different atmosphere than your standard RvR combat. You knew if you hunted down and wiped out the enemy, you wouldn’t have to deal with them again until the zone changed hands, making the combat have its own intrinsic value beyond the RPs you got for it. Taking down the enemy meant being able to operate unhindered in the zone.
