Who is the protagonist of the all Warcraft story/lore?

I was discussing this with some friends and we couldn’t come to a 100% conclusion.

One said it was Illidan, since he is/was one of the main figures in the fight against the main antagonist, the Burning Legion, and he is one of the oldest characters in the franchise (appearing in War3).

Another said it’s Khadgar, since he’s been active and involved in shenanigans since Warcraft 1 and 2.

Tyrande was also mentioned, as she played an important role in the RTS War3 and had significant highlights in the Legion, Shadowlands, and now Dragonflight expansions.

Even Thrall came up in the discussion, but unfortunately, he’s been a bit lackluster lately with his elemental dysfunction.

So now I ask the community:
Who is the protagonist of the story/lore?

I know technically it’s us adventurers, since we do all the “work” and are the champions of existence. But I’m talking about NPC characters.

I also know that in each expansion, there’s a different protagonist for that moment, but there are always those main characters who have been recurring from the beginning, helping or taking part alongside these new characters. (In the context of the entire current Warcraft lore, from the RTS games to the current WoW, there are always recurring characters.)

Who could we say is the protagonist? (Excluding us, the players)

There’s many non-player character protagonists.

The lore is too varied and told too many different stories to have anybody be the protagonist anymore.

It’s more like we have a hundred story arcs, each with their own protagonists.

It’s who ever Blizzard decides is the pet character for the given expansion. Once it was Thrall, then it was Anduin, then good ole Dadgar took the wheel for awhile. Now we’re back to Anduin.

There isn’t one protagonist because there are many stories around the world.

Me.

It’s whatever NPC Blizzard thrusts into the limelight at any given time.

You would think it would be the players but you can remove the player entirely and the story would be just about the same as if they never existed lol.

The main character of the wow story?
Thats anduin

There shouldn’t be one, but it’s Anduin.

Garrosh Hellscream

All heroes are protagonists, but not all protagonists are heroes. Same as all villains can be the antagonists, but not all antagonists are villains.

I.E; Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker. Joker would be the Protagonist of that film.

Spiderman (all media version) J. Jonah Jameson would be an at antagonist, but not a villain.

In WoW’s setting our characters are equal to being both Pro and Antag to each other due to the Faction Divide. When the faction conflict fully is wiped out, well be pseudo protags in the shadows of the revolving door of named NPCs who get the spot light. Thus having more “Kill stealing” moments from said npcs.

Every questgiver is the protagonist of their own story.

But ultimately the NPCs are just the background for my adventures.

(Worlds are not books, the concepts of literature don’t really apply)
