Who is it really to blame for how the story went the way that it did?

It’s the combination of both teams. Danuser took more punishment than deserved, but there you go.

I would say it was combination of story tellers that made the stories. After all wow has an long historic lore and to get it right takes time.

The story has been absolutely dreadful. A complete disgrace actually. Christie Golden shouldn’t be blamed for this though and I’ve heard her book was pretty good.

It’s pretty bad… Sylvanas deserves to be beheaded like nathanos, the whole jailer is a joke… hopefully DF just moves beyond shadowlands and doesn’t look back

Bit of both. The way the story is told Alex set up and set the wow team on the my (alex’s) waifu sylvanus story where she tries to bring about the end of the world but also is not a bad guy. Steve’s team though wrote pretty much all the details of shadowlands and didn’t manage to make it ok considering what they were given to work with.
With SL people didn’t have that much references to go on,the jailer is a character we never heard of before ,the environment though good was too theoretic -metaphysical that people are throw off (people don’t dive into the unknown like this ) because the bases is not a reference to the real world .
We can go through the whole story of world belief system that don’t make sense to Azeroth’s history.

Was surprised as christie Golden is usually on point with her writing. The treatment sylvanas got was criminal and it destroyed her entire mystique. She went from mysterious and completely unpredictable (the core strength of her character) to Garrosh 2.0

It’s really not as bad as people act, imo. People act so catastrophically about SL and it’s bizarre.
Was the story direction a miscalculation? For sure. But there are lots of high points and the biggest weakness is a reliance on multimedia storytelling.

As a life long and avid comic book reader, I am generally very tolerant of bad storylines. I can tolerate Season 8 of GoT and the SW sequels just fine.
SL is by far is the lowest point storywise for Warcraft.

Both of their teams.
Can we at least give it a different name or something. Like call it GoTTV or something. The TV series ended in hot trash because the brilliant writing of George R.R. Martin no longer existed. The series overlapped the book.
As for the topic, why try to blame someone? Blizzard has effed up multiple times and this is arguably the worst. Dragon Flight is a chance for them to redeem themselves. (I don’t have faith personally.)
