Who created the Lich King again?

So I thought the burning legion originally created the Lich King by putting Ner’zhul’s soul into the armor, but it looks like now the Jailor created him? Is this a retcon?

My dad, he works for blizzard.

Retconned him there’s some good YouTube videos on it that tell the story

Kil’jaeden infused the armor with the spirit of Ner’zhul, BUT Frostmourne and the helm of domination were both made by the runecarver under the orders of the Jailer to establish his influence in the mortal world.

Basically the Jailer made the stuff and the burning legion was like “Ooh, shiny” and started making use of them.

The Lich King was the result of many people and many things working together separately.

The Runecarver created the Helm of Domination and Frostmourne.

The Jailer had them crafted.

The Dreadlords gave it to Kil’jaeden.

Kil’jaeden stuffed Ner’zhul’s soul inside the Helm.

Arthas’ mom and dad made Arthas.

Ner’zhul gave Frostmourne to Arthas, which consumed his soul.

Arthas himself walked up to the Frozen Throne and put on the Helm of Domination, fusing his soul in Frostmourne with Ner’zhul’s soul in the Helm.

They both did. The Jailer supplied the armor and sword, but Ner’zhul’s spirit was implanted into it by Kil’jaeden. Ner’zhul was the guiding mind at the time. The armor is useless without a host of some kind.

It’s not really a major retcon. All that was ever said was the armor was acquired by the dreadlords for the task. It never really said they themselves made it or where they got it. Even if it was implied, the change isn’t a big one.

It was two evil powers playing off each other for their own ends.

I think I remember it being part of the story that when Arthas was confronted with the option of fusing his spirit with Ner’zhul’s, he decided not to.

So I guess my question then is why would the Jailor work with the burning legion? Wasn’t the legion trying to take souls to empower themselves, which would take souls away from the Jailor?

That’s not what happened.

Arthas fused with Ner’zhul, and then he crushed Ner’zhul’s side of the soul.

In the end, Arthas used Ner’zhul’s feelings of guilt for exploding his own planet to “trap him into a downward spiral of despair until nothing remained but a wail of sorrow”, whatever that means.

That is detailed on Chronicle Vol 3 Page 171.

I’m not sure we were ever told how the dreadlords obtained the Helm and Forstmourne. It was obviously assumed it was all done by the Legion at the time, but there are now implications that the dreadlords have mixed allegiances.

Welcome to Blizzard, where the story is rewritten every 5 minutes and consistency doesn’t matter.

Kil’jaeden told the dreadlords to help him make the Lich King and they took the opportunity to use the secret Jailer magic to do it. That’s the problem with subcontracting, you never know what you’re gonna get.

Just need either Drew Carey or Aiesh Tyler to host this hit show!

the Jailer created the Armor and sword, gave it to the Nathrezim working for Denathrius, the Nathrezim infiltrated the Burning Legion, Kil’jaeden put Ner’zhul’s soul into the armor, then when ner’zhul got too powerful the Legion trapped him in Northrend where they then lured Arthas to take over the mantle for them.

To expand, the Dreadlords who serve Sire Denathrius (Who served the Jailor) infiltrated the other cosmic powers, including the Fel (Legion) and played a part in getting the Legion to create the Lich King with artifacts from the Shadowlands.

EDIT: I’m way too slow :frowning:

Blizzard themselves said that Ner’zhul will be in Shadowlands.

The Runecarver made the Vessels of Domination and they ended up in the possession of Dreadlords who along with Ner’zhul reforged Frostmourne to steal Souls rather than simply cut them and gave them to Kil’jaeden.

The Jailer naturally discovers Frostmourne and the Helm of Domination when Arthas is thrown in and interrogates the Runecarver for the Vessels of Domination’s blueprints so that he can make them for Anduin when he infiltrates the Archon’s sanctum.

Since Ner’zhul earned the Jailer’s ire and got thrown into the Sanctum of Domination it is likely the Orc refused to enchant Kingsmourne to steal Souls like he did Frostmourne meaning the Jailer only got the Key itself and nothing more.

Ner’zhul was the only side of the Soul!

Arthas’s Soul was in Frostmourne leaving a sentient Body that had a will of it’s own. The fact that it was able to guilt trip Ner’zhul is a good indication of what it would do to it’s own Soul if it were allowed to torment it!

Ner’zhul being guilt-tripped probably is what made him willing to go against the Jailer and get thrown into the Sanctum of Domination Raid that’s coming up!

I’m thinking he might be one of the 5 bosses they haven’t mentioned yet for the Sanctum raid in 9.1
