White Screen on Startup

Has anyone had issues with the WoW Client this week? Every time I open any version of WoW it just goes right to a white screen and freezes.

So far I’ve tried:

  • PC restarts
  • Letting it sit on that white screen for extended periods to see if it eventually loads
  • Opening WoW directly from the WoW icon (not using battle.net)
  • GPU driver updates (and rollbacks to check)
  • Windows updates
  • AV turned off
  • Run as admin
  • Total uninstall of battle.net and all WoW clients + reinstall
  • Dirext X updates
  • Adding the additional command to WoW -d2dl11 (something like that, can’t remember but there are three different ones)
  • Deleting WTF folders
  • Deleting a couple other folders that forum users mentioned
  • Tested that everything works in other games
  • Run %appdata (forget the exact command but I did that and local app data and deleted the WoW/Eye/BNet Folders)

I haven’t been able to launch WoW since yesterday morning. I have literally no idea how to fix it at this point. I’ve never had issues that weren’t resolved with the basic stuff above.

Is there a way that I can upload my DxDiag to this post?

Probably need to update or uninstall it to test whether it is causing this issue.

Yes, copypasta into a reply.

I’m having the same issue as OP and have tried a similar range of steps, including a reinstall and the dx11 method. WoW boots up but only a white screen appears and then the program freezes up. I’ve tried waiting to see if it will eventually progress but no luck.

I’ve only recently come back to WoW but was able to play before the last patch without any issues.

I can see a couple of other threads about this same topic, is it maybe to do with older video cards? I have an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 and my driver version is 552.44

I’m having this same issue!!! It is definitely NOT because of graphics card–I’m running GeForce RTX 3070 8GB card and this is happening to me. I’ve opened a ticket, but only gotten automated responses so far.
Tried everything they listed; however, my internet connection is fine. That’s not the problem. I can get into Blizzard website AND battle.net without any issues. My issue is that after I’ve entered my PW into battle.net app and hit Log In, approved the authenticator code on the app on my phone, I get to the main WoW splash screen. It’s when I select the Play button for Wow Retail that it stops working. I get a blank screen behind the splash screen, have to hit AltTab to get to it, my cursor spins for about 1 or 2 minutes then the system sends error message to Microsoft without showing any error codes.
Note: This has been happening since Friday 5/17/24 afternoon, even though I played WoW Retail without any difficulties on Thursday 5/16/24 morning before 10 AM PT.
I am now paying for something that I cannot use, to no fault of my own.

I am having the same issue. Submitted a ticket with a whole lot of diagnostics, event log extracts, system config etc, and got the automated replay telling me to do what I had already done.

What has been tried so far
Battlenet app seem to work Okay, but wow.exe is crashing, giving a blank screen, see wow error.txt. This file was extracted from the event log.
I have done extensive testing and followed the recommended fixes on your site.

  1. Repaired wow installation
  2. Removed add-ons
  3. Checked and applied Windows updates
  4. Check and updated system drivers for Graphics, sound etc
  5. Checked AV and firewall settings
  6. Disables VPN and AV
  7. Removed Windows updates
  8. Re installed Windows updates
  9. run sfc /scannow
  10. Run DXDIAGS
  11. Renamed WoW folder - re installed WoW
  12. Tried Classic WoW
  13. Created a new Windows Profile - wow.exe still crashed

I was trying to do a follow up and my ticket was closed without any attempt by “Technical Support” to address the problem, what are we paying for?

Yep. Got that message today. “We’ve resolved and closed your tix” “Contact an IT rep”. Why, will they be able to get Blizzard to fix their game? Because it’s not my computer, or my internet connection, or ANYthing on my end. It’s THEIR problem and they won’t help us, paying customers, as if they never make a mistake or have any trouble with any of their rollouts. In this case, the WoW Remix: Mists of Pandaria. I had no problems playing the game until last Thursday afternoon.

I am having the same issue as well. I’m not as savvy as most in this thread, I did try a scan and repair but it didn’t help. I can’t even submit a ticket as it’s asking for file types I’ve never heard of. Do they usually sort this out, or am I expected to fix it?

When you’ve got the ticket screen open, if you click on the icon next to the requested file it will open a new window, and Blizzard explains in detail (read carefully though) how to extract the info for both of the files they are requesting you send.
You then can attach the files in the designated area below the request, but you have to do them one at a time (it will turn red until second file is added).
If you want to include screen shots (create images), you can hit the key sequence Alt+PrintScreen and it will create an image you can add.
Hope this helps.

Note: There was an Nvidia graphics software update this morning. Completed the install and restarted my machine. Unfortunately made no difference–still having same issue of not being able to launch the game after opening Battlenet. :frowning:

Thank you, I was able to get the ticket submitted. They told me to crowd source the forums or contact a local tech. The lack of responsibility at Blizz astounds me.

OK. THIS WORKED FOR ME!!! I can now get into the character screen and play (Retail).
Search for Blizzard article ID 23848, Closing Background Applications. Went to Startup Apps, and what I had to close was: SecurityHealthSystray.exe, Amazon Music Helper.exe, msedge.exe, Dropbox.exe. They suggest closing all Startup apps, restart machine, and re-enable each to see which one it is. I HOPE THIS HELPS YOU GUYS!!!
