While we wait, how is Guild Wars 2?

I’m just impatient and wanted something different to do while waiting for release. I’ve played ESO and that one is pretty good, but just got tired of it. So, do any of you play GW2? Is it good for a more casual player? How is pvp compared to WoW?

ESO and FFXIV are the only 2 good other MMORPGs to play right now. But funny that you ask that, lazypeon made a video about it not too long ago:

A couple month ago I logged into my really old Guild Wars 2 account and found it to still be really active, sadly I’m not sure how the PvP [Don’t rememeber if there was] is in the game. :frowning:

I loved GW2’s combat, but the story is trash and pvp/wvw are all but abandoned.

I wanted to like GW2 but couldn’t get into it. Seems like everything is based on rotation and you only have a few skills at a time so it’s just pushing the same 5 buttons in the same sequence over and over. I could be wrong but that was my take a few years ago and when I tried again recently.

Still doing good, I still come back every time a living story is dropped. Haven’t done pvp in a bit but from what I heard it’s doing well.

GW2 is weird to me. Persobally not a fan, though class concept and character creator are pretty good.

For me side mmos are:

Swtor
Eso

Honorable mention to Bless, Terra, and other free mmos I can just screw around in.

Story was good first time leveling and even revisting from time to time. 3 years or more since I had reinstalled. It was a good past game to keep those memories in the past kind of like Age of Empires is best left in the past. Shame AOEO closed.

Years ago, I took a year off WoW to play GW2. I liked it, but got bored and came back to WoW. Occasionally, I’ll go back to GW2 and play it for a week or so, get bored, and than uninstall it. It’s really not a bad game. It’s pretty good.

I had a lot of fun playing a necromancer wielding a scepter and dagger.

It’s a nice diversion. I find the combat more fun that the usual WoW stand in one place and take turns waking a mob with a stick. Exploration is fun. But most of the nice transmogs are store bought and the end game gets dull. But this was 2 years ago. May be different

GW2 is fine and very casual friendly. The issue for me is there is no hook. Even ESO i get hooked from time to time but GW2 i play it for some time and then quit soon after, it also looks very outdated now for new players, wow at least upgraded the leveling and characters. Anyway both games the endgame can get dull very fast.
If you enjoyed ESO you will prolly like FFXIV just be sure to not criticize the game, or anything people there don’t accept criticism at all, game is fine if you dont care about PvP and dont mind a slower(2.5sec gcd) combat.

Tried GW2 a couple of times. I can’t actually get into it… I just don’t see a reason to continue playing after a couple of hours. I don’t even know if it has a story.

I really wanted to love GW2. For a little while when it came out, I played it more than WoW. Mesmers were a very interesting class, and I had loads of fun being able to almost solo a fight after my team died in a dungeon because of the ability to teleport around and use illusions.

Eventually, however, I got tired of the micro transactions. The best transmog is store bought, I had a bunch of chests and not enough keys to use them, the base mount skins are pretty standard and most other skins are store bought, the end game got stale exceptionally fast, and for as much fun as I mentioned my Mesmer above was, I missed having designated healing and tanking roles. I know they added it back in, sort of, but it was a little too late.

Still, if you’re interested in just dabbling around, the world is pretty cool, and I’m personally fond of the points of interest and vistas to encourage exploration. Many of the jumping puzzles when I played were also pretty exciting to complete, though some could be so cruel if you failed them.

I haven’t been back in years, but it wasn’t a bad game even then. It was…acceptable, and enjoyable, but nothing particularly holds you into it if you have other MMOs out there vying for your attention.

Long time GW2 player.

The combat in general is wayyyy better than ESO (which has a floaty combat feel, bland abilities, little interaction between abilities, and poorly performing Cyrodil problems).

I’d say the combat in GW2 is better than wow in some ways (more things with movement or brilliant effects like mirror images that actually trick people). It can be worse than WoW in that the abilities don’t have as much play off eachother or synergy with other elements of the class (example, the way Rejuve might effect swiftmend or old conflag/immolate interactions). Every class in wow has some inter-ability synergy and it’s just not there in GW2 (or ESO). They also go through meta’s where conditions (debuffs) are very strong, fondly referred to as the condi-cancer meta, and it feels really bad. Essentially there are hard caps on cleansing, so if condi’s get overtuned theres basically nothing some classes can do until the next balance.

Structured PvP I would say is as fun as WoW, better than ESO (but nothing comes close to SWTOR Huttball). There is no real ladder or progression though, so it’s just doing it for fun. If you enjoy fun, good. If you need to flex your rank on someone, wrong game.

GW2’s WvW pvp is a lot of fun, but while it performs better than ESO in terms of lag it still struggles on big battles and a lot of the WvW community has moved on (either dead in a subreddit waiting for CU, awaiting crowfall, or playing Archage).

If you’ve never played, it’s certainly worth trying out, but I feel like there is not enough time between now and Shadowlands to really get a max level for WvW with solid gear. You can walk right into structured pvp at any level though if thats your preference. Gear and level all gets normalized there.

PvE wise, the story is meh, but the world is Ah-may-zing. I’ve never seen a game world in an MMO with as many thoughtful nooks and crannies and secrets to find.

Sadly, all the best developers associated with the game have moved on to a new studio called ManaWorks, which seems to be more about engine tech for others rather than an actual game.

Its a good casual game you can jump in and out of when you feel like it. It definitely does the exploration and points of interest aspect right for an MMO. Story is pretty solid. Combat is good, but not nearly as fluid as WoW. It likely get monotonous to you much quicker than WoW does. Unfortunately I can’t comment on PvP at because its been years and years since I tried it out and probably is nothing like it was back then.

Thanks for the replies all! I guess I’ll give it a try and see. I like having a game to play and I just have a hard time doing WoW chores this close to the expansion coming out.

As for FFXIV, I’ve heard a lot of people say they like it, but that 2.5 sec gcd seems kinda slow.

GW2’s gameplay is alright. Give it a try, can’t hurt.

As for the story though, it’s absolutely atrocious and does the original no justice.

ESO is my main game, they just released a DLC. Having a lot of fun with that. I also play GW2, it has a lot to offer but their interface is the most different from WoWs and takes a bit of getting used to. The way they do their mounts though, yeah that’s a lot of fun. Their PvP is interesting also.

I never stick to only one game so that I don’t burn out or end up with nothing to do due to content droughts.
