Which trinket is better?

So, I’m a holy paladin and I’ve been using “Second Wind” and “Briarwood Reed” as my healing trinkets since I acquired them. However, I got “Shard of the Scale” off Onyxia this weekend, which is apparently BIS for my spec. My question is, which of the aforementioned trinkets would you switch out for it? I’m leaning towards “Second Wind” because it provides a lesser healing boost than “Briarwood.” Your thoughts?

I’d probably stick with Second Wind, since it has the use effect and the difference in +healing is only 7. Granted it’s only 300 mana over 10 seconds, it’s been just enough once or twice to save me.

It’s “apparantly” bis. As in, someone else pointed it out to you. As in, you have no idea what the item does or why you even want it. But you won it, so surely you need it, right?
…but assuming you’re just a robot paladin flash of light spammer, I’ll put it in baby words: Wear mana regeneration items in long fights, throughput items in short fights. Capiche?

MP5 is really, really weak in a game where bosses die in a minute. Shard of the scale gives you 192 mana a minute. Even the 2 longest fights in BWL (nef and chromaggus) die in 4 minutes to average guilds. On top of this paladins are the most mana efficient healers in the game. Id personally stick with reed and second wind and look for another bis list.

Still with +heals and flash heals

Shard will get better later, when fights last longer.

You need to understand how your class works and how these stats function so you can adjust accordingly. I personally carry multiple sets (mp5 set, +heal set, hybrid set, direct heals set) to suit every encounter, but to do so you need to know how these stats benefit you.

I am not a Paladin healer, but iirc you have a talent that refunds your mana for crits, which makes crit one of your best stats for healing. Barring that, you’re looking for +healing to let your downranked heals be more efficient and powerful.

To know how good mp5 items are for you, You need to calculate how much mana you get per minute from them and how long your average fights are. Most fights currently end fairly quickly, which limits the usefulness of mp5 over +healing, but there do exist breakpoints. Understanding how each stat benefits you is the best way to be an all around good healer.

Shard is usless in MC/BWL, any time you’re purely dispelling you have no need for that mp5 as a pala

It’s most a dungeon thing, pvp you generally wanna use ur actives, but it’s bis pure stat “stick” for trinket slot. So def worth keeping in ur bags

On a fight like domo or rag, you probably want second wind over briarwood reed cuz you’ll get use for the active unless your clear times are very strong. All others yea you would use briarwood reed.

But there is a contradiction there, if you don’t need mana, why are you equipping the shard in the first place?

Stat weight isn’t everything, only equip when dark runes/major manas aren’t enough, or you’re unwilling to use them. Obvious use case being dungeons

second wind will give you some mana back
briarwood will give you around 8 healing on flashes
both are good choices but those 300 mana CAN make a difference

It’s taking your groups about 01:30:00 to clear MC, so Shard of the Scale will restore roughly three full mana bars worth of mana over the course of an MC run.

Use whatever you want, it doesn’t really matter. If I had Shard, I’d probably just swap it out for Second Wind on boss fights for maximum +Healing while using the on-use effect on CD, and then use Shard for trash.

Second Wind and Briarwood Reed are both better than Shard of the Scale unless you’re only dispelling, e.g. on Chromaggus.

Roflmao this min max culture is getting out of hand. People just turn off their brain and follow a list they googled nowadays

Which they could do just fine if the list they were following was actually compiled by someone who knows how to min/max properly.

A Holy Paladin BiS list saying Shard of the Scale is BiS without explaining the rare circumstances in which that is the case is a useless list put together by someone who doesn’t know how to min/max. No reasonable min/maxer would recommend using Shard of the Scale over +Healing items when Paladins aren’t even coming close to running out of mana with how short the fights are.

He may have just misread the Wowhead page’s first sentence: “Shard of the Scale is considered a best-in-slot PvP trinket for Restoration Drui… Holy Paladins…”

The DM library trinket is better than that IMO. I’ll use the mana regen then swap out to the DM trinket (cost like 1g and a trip to DM to get).

I got the class trinket out of BWL and it’s super fun and I think finally takes the place of one of these other trinkets. Still waiting on the rejuv gem though.

This reminds me of when i lost shard in a roll on my shaman, and the shaman who won said “is this trinket good or something”

You are such a friendly fellow

I love my shard <3 <3
