I’m thinking of playing a mage in Legion remix. I have no idea which spec to take. I was leaning towards frost. Which spec would you all recommend for a mage beginner?
For questing I would choose frost while levelling best kit and mechanics for it.
Thank you
I also recommend frost. Arcane is very playable, but it’s a bit more work to learn. Frost is mostly responding to procs from Frostbolt in order to deal decent damage. I never recommend Fire in any content, but I’ve been informed it usually does good damage in Mythic+ dungeons towards the end of the expansion.
Thanks for the input! I decided to try a frost one now instead of waiting for remix and I really like it! I’m surprised actually. It was the only class I hadn’t tried besides warrior and evoker. I like it better than the elemental shaman I made recently. It seems to flow better.
Probably arcane or frost. Fire is great but does no damage outside of its combustion cd. It kind of funnels you into a playstyle where you pull all the mobs you need and combust. Which isn’t viable if you aren’t geared or skilled enough to tank said mobs. Fire also has a limited supply of instant casts which makes it horrible at legacy farming. Whereas frost has ice lance and arcane has barrage and arcane explosion for instant lowbie mob deaths.
Ok, but if Legion Remix plays anything like Legion did, you’ll have to pick a spec and play it until the very end (unless you have 50+ hours a week to spend farming AP for your Artifact Weapon…).
I played Fire during Legion, it was extremely strong throughout the entire expansion (or at least until Tomb of Sargeras, the last raid I did before I had to take a break), so if you are looking for an end-game spec, I’d go Fire.
For all other expansions, I’d recommend Frost for leveling. But because of the Artifact in Legion, I would go for Fire.
Also, as a side note - I don’t know how Blizzard is thinking about the Legendary items for the Remix. The way it worked back in the original Legion, this was for me the single and biggest flaw of the expansion - the fact that it was totally random and some Legendary items were MUCH stronger than the rest created a very, very, very unfair RNG, that made a lot of people quit. For Fire, if you didn’t have the Bracers and the Ring (or, later, the Bracers and the Belt), you couldn’t do Mythic Raiding at all.
But it won’t. It would be somewhat like Legion but with TWW mage mechanics. I still say Combustion is the biggest obstacle for fire mages to be popular and effective in all content. I enjoyed Fire during Legion (though I mostly played Frost) but haven’t had any fun playing it since then.
Are you saying that it won’t have the Artifact Weapons? That was one of the key points of the expansion.
One way around the grinding problem would be that the AP you earn can be applied to all specs in parallel; in other words, you can level all 3 Artifacts at the same time, without having to grind 3x. This would allow players to level up in one spec, and then switch to another later on.
I don’t know. I would think artifact weapons are a given. I just meant that the way Fire plays in TWW is different than how it played in Legion in some ways.
Sure, that is fine. Going back to the original post, though: in all other expansions, for a Mage, it is usually recommended to level as Frost, then switch later. For Legion, because of the AP grind (which I assume will still be there, because it is how you empower your Artifact Weapon), that might not be the wisest decision. That’s all.
How the spec will play, sure, I agree that it might be closer to TWW than Legion (although it will be interesting to see how they do the Talents, given that a lot of Talents in the current Mage trees were Legendary powers, such as the Scorch crit at low health, SKB) or from the Artifact Weapon (such as Phoenix Flames).
I agree. If I were to level a mage in Legion remix (I won’t), I would go Arcane. I like the staff talking to me.
