Which processor is better?

Basically what the title says. Just trying to figure out which processor is the better one specifically for WoW Intel® Core™ i7-4770 or AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2950X. It could also be another processor if neither of those is best so tell me what you know. No concern about price but would like to keep it down if I can but insist on running everything on highest settings.

(ETA: The two I was looking at)

Maybe tell us which ones you’re talking about

Intel® Core™ i7-4770 or AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2950X are the two I was looking at but can get pretty much any. Simply would like to know the best for WoW. Wouldn’t mind knowing the best in the mid price and higher priced ranges if they have similar performance.

What a weird spread lol

I7-8700k

Or

Ryzen 2600x

Both reasonably priced, great for WoW, and anything else really

Threadripper is made for workstation loads, not gaming.

4770k is old, like, discontinued old.

Go with Salgeron’s suggestions.

you could drop down to i5-9400f vs. ryzen 5 2600, they are comparable in price and perform in gaming pretty closely, although the 2600 is going to do better in multithreaded tasks due to SMT vs no SMT, and you can OC the 2600.

I’m hesitant to recommend any locked intel chips tbh

Thread ripper should beat the i7 4770 in everything if we’re being honest. But why are we comparing a 5 year old i7 to a 2018 content creator cpu?

TR would be a waste though

Agreed Salgeron, like others said though; he should be considering the i5 9400f or r5 2600 instead.

I would like to have a 2990wx one day because 32 cores

but i don’t think i could get the money for it either :slightly_frowning_face:

I was comparing them based on availability and their gHz. I don’t know enough to build my own so trying to get one through CyberPowerPC or IBuyPower. Sucks I know but that’s my options. Those were both offered and I had read that the Threadrippers weren’t great for WoW and that I should be looking for higher gHz processors with fewer cores. “He” is actually a she lol but he works too…question is the same.

Building is SUPER simple, but if you’re set on buying prebuilt try one of these instead:

nzxt bld
maingear
hp omen

in that order, cyberpower and ibuy have HORRIBLE customer service.

Thread ripper is more for content creation, it’s not targeted at gamers. Gamers should consider the ryzen 7 and ryzen 5 cpu’s. Also I would never buy a gaming pc from HP ever, nzxt is good though.

Linus did a run at some of the major ones, Maingear came out on top I believe in CS and HP actually wasn’t bad just took a lot of time.

Cyber wouldn’t even offer then a pc for 1500 and ibuy refused to fix the problem when they called, it was sad.

They didn’t test nzxt but I have heard nothing but rave reviews about them.

Another thing to note, with maingear and nzxt you’re getting consumer parts, so upgrading is easy, HP and the like use proprietary parts and it can make upgrading a pain in the rear.

Will check those out, thanks. Guess there are more places since the last time I bought a desktop almost 10 years ago from CyberPPC lol. I currently have a HP Omen laptop but of course I have cooling issues with it and wanted to build something that is better AND a desktop so I can pass this down to the next generation of WoW players (my 16yo daughter LOL)

That being said, I can already do pretty much everything with a desktop except install the motherboard and processor. Everything else I have done. I have to admit I am scared of installing a processor, but only because my house is super dusty no matter how much I dust or run an air filter.

Are you going with a laptop or desktop this time around?

as long as you don’t dilly dally you should be fine, we have 2 cats and 2 rabbits (hair everrrrrrywhere) and I’ve never had an issue with the CPU/Heatsink, it’s really very easy to do now.

a very good run at it, follow that and you’d not only save money you’d be able to get a lot better parts for less.

I have 2 cats and 4 dogs and 4 kids LOL. Planning a desktop this time around. Quite tired of a laptop and actually use my laptop as a tower essentially anyway so would benefit more from a desktop so I could get better cooling.

Now that’s a busy house! shouldn’t be too much of a problem though, it’s really kind of foolproof nowadays.

Hell, jay built a pc doing everything they tell you NOT to do and it worked fine.

That is good to hear, Pyro. The last time I thought about building my own you essentially needed a sterile chamber with positive pressure was the way it was put to me to keep dust from getting in there and messing everything up.
