Which Pet?

Returning to Retail…

Does pet family matter for DPS? Will ferocity do more DPS?

I think they do the same, just what you want out of the pet. Ferocity: Leech, Tenacity: hp, Cunning: speed.
BiS pets are Clefthoof(Ferocity and tough) and SB(Tanky with heal and stealth) for Bm and Scalehides(Basically Clefthooves) for non-BM. And if you wanna be picky, Chimaeron has the slowest attk speed of any pet in the name at 0.25.

I tend to use ferocity. Between the leech and lust, it’s hard to stray from it.

From what I read (though haven’t tested), ferocity is surviving better than tenacity pets in some cases…I’m guessing due to the leech.

I only see myself using a cunning pet for speed runs when I’m not concerned about health…or dps. Just movement speed.

Clefthoof gets the best of Tenacity and Ferocity.

Guess it’s time I tame one, appreciate the info!

For the AC if you have one, I’d recommend Chimaeron due to the very slow attk speed.

They all have the same DPS with their auto attacks and basic attacks. The only difference is survivability and utility.

Ferocity pets, with the 10% leech buff help both you and your pet stay alive.
Also, the Lust 25% haste buff is very handy.
My ferocity pet, a wolf has Dash, gets the pet on the target, doing damage. Also has furious Bite, a 50% slow, for 6 secs, every 10 secs.
I always play MM, almost always PvE, and I think the Ferocity pets, because of their Leech, is the best choice.

Why is slow attack speed a good thing?

All you need is Faultline.

Yes, Ferocity pets because of Leech are better tanks than Tenacity pets. If Tenacity pets could have health at roughly 70 - 80% of a tank of the same iLevel, they would probably be okay. Also Pet Mend would have to heal better on Tenacity pets. In BFA, Tenacity pets got nerfed hard and never got properly addressed while in many xpacs prior to it, they did pretty well and could serve as a tank backup.

I haven’t had any issues tanking anything other than last boss in lvl3 Toragath with either spirit beast (when I’m BM) or monkey (when I’m MM).

I wrote a couple weakauras that help me manage my pet health (notification if pet is < 75% health & mend pet is usable).

All I was interested in was DPS output (thank you for the answer).

Depending on the speed, BM and SV boost their pets’ attack speed. The Slower the attack speed, the more dmg dealt to compensate, but turned normal-ish with BM/SV.
It’s the same reason as why Deth’tilac(fastest attack speed in-game) is kinda bad for SV/BM if you’re being optimal enough: the attack speed cap. Deth’tilac attacks so fast, he caps easily with buffs vs Chimaeron(slowest) who can get more from the attack speed buff and can get more effective attack-based damage out.

This is the first time I’ve encountered this concept. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:
I never knew pets had an attack speed cap.

After doing a bit of research, I stand corrected.

For MM and SV, all pets deal the same dps.
For BM, all pets EXCEPT deth’tilac deal the same dps.

Only Deth’tilac’s dps is lower due to the attack speed cap and frenzy buff not working so well together (the attack speed cap of 0.25 s is bottlenecking the insanely fast animation speed of Deth’tilac).

Numerically, this translates to only ~2% auto attack dps loss. Pet auto attack isn’t 100% of your dps, so it ultimately translates to ~less than 1% dps, maybe a 0.5% dps loss. This is something quite minor, but if you really want to min-max, basically just avoid deth’tilac.

This was fixed in Shadowlands, btw. Deth’tilac is no longer a DPS loss for BM.

Oh, thank you for informing!

I stand… corrected again
