Which DPS? I seek wisdom

Greetings!

Due to being overwhelmed with trying to learn how to heal with the group of friends I’ve been playing with another friend of mine has offered to take up healing allowing me to take a DPS spot. However… Cannot decide on what class. Melee has always been my preferred choice when it comes to the role. We have a BDK so not really wanting to play as another DK. Was looking at between Ret Paladin, Fury Warrior or Demon Hunter.

Out of the three just wondering which would be a better pick for me. If it helps I’ll be playing with a BM Hunter/Resto Shaman if that helps with picking.

Thanks!

Destro locks
Fire mages

Surv hunter
Arms War
Dk.

From those choices I’d go Fury Warrior, DH, Ret P… in that order. I’m also a fan of Arms Warrior and would even throw that in for consideration. GL!

No one is going to be able to tell you want class or spec you’ll enjoy playing.

DH is probably more forgiving to pick up, since it’s very tanky (has high self-healing), has some of the best mobility, and you get brief downtime during Eye Beam casts. But otherwise both it and Fury require a lot of APM. No idea about ret, since the last time I played it was just for the Mage Tower back in Legion.

Arms warrior should be pretty mobile come SL. I’d probably go range if it was me (hunter, lock), but it’s not. Nice to have at least 1 pure dps and I haven’t been too happy with my rogues.

All 3 you mentioned are going to perform ok in SL.

All 3 have good to great mobility.

All 3 require minimum skill to master.

It’s all about flavor at that point.

Warriors and Paladins are a little more gear dependent, DH is the most mobile of all 3.

Personally:

  1. Fury Warr is looking to be almost the same as now, only Covenant abilities don’t seem to synergize with the spec at all. My opinion though.
  2. Ret is looking to have the biggest most insane burst it’s ever had now that you can macro Avenger w/Wings Plus Trinket all out of GCD, so it might be fun for some situations.
  3. DH’s are DH’s. There’s nothing to say except they are fun and will remain so.

Play what you want. Plate is very cool leveling as you feel the benefit of that armor vs leather, but DH’s mobility is above everyone else.

Personally I would hold out a couple of weeks until the pre-patch is out. You will not feel like you have lost something or not know what to do with something new. You will avoid the chance of starting something and the time invested in it only to have it become something you do not want to play.

Ret Paladins are dope.

Especially with your history as a healer you would probably pick up their amazing utility toolkit naturally. Then you can also ease into your alternate role as Holy any time you want fast queues, easy invites or to fill a spot for a group of friends.

As someone who’s been a ret main since TBC, I’m completely biased though.

I am curious, what is your experience in game, what do you like to do and what content are you going to try to do?

Some brief descriptions
Ret paladin- great burst cooldowns that make them feel like they explode with damage, sometimes they do literally, really good utility and group support with Blessing of Protection, Word of Glory, and Lay on Hands.

Fury Warrior- basically just button mash till things are dead, fast paced.

Demon Hunter- if you can see something you can jump on it, best Quality of Life class in the game and super easy to play while still being satisfying.

Death Knight- you said no but lets be real its the best class in the game. Unholy is a really fun class with great burst both aoe and single target and can summon a lot of undead minions. Frost lays out the pain with a lot of procs and crits that feel satisfying.

Shaman- I’ll mention them because enhancement exists as a melee class and you might want to flex ranged sometimes. Enhancement has really cool animations and they bring a lot to the table with things like Tremor totem to break fears, a healing totem, and windfury totem to buff the damage of your parties auto attacks. Plus they are fun.

This as well. Just make one anyway.

If you are going with Demon Hunter, be sure to make one now! They start at level 98 (out of 120), but as soon as pre-patch comes out, they will start at level 10 (out of 60). Good luck!

Been playing for a long time now but mostly recently just stepped into LFR as most of my toons just been farming older transmog sets. I am gonna push M+ come Shadowlands. I enjoying playing a melee class. Had a DK main during Wrath til Cata. Played a fury warrior back in classic. I already have one of each class at 120 so that helps me already.

Mythic+ is really fun, and all the specs are good in there, the best group ones are likely dh because of their aoe cc and dmg and ret for their support utility. However, they are all playable and it depends on damage tuning but they likely will all be perfectly fine so just pick the most fun one.

Mage and Lock are generally safe bets.

There hasn’t been a damn tier where Warlocks haven’t been valuable assets to the raid, and are straight-up mandatory for several Mythic bosses.

Luckily all three of those are pretty simple to play.

Out of those three I say go warrior. You will probably start out a bit of an underdog, but fury tends to pick up steam as the xpac goes on. Plus if you choose to tank warriors and paladins always seem to be top.

Second would be paladin: you can do any of the three roles if dps bores you. But paladins are much slower paced to me.

Finally. Demon hunter. Don’t get me wrong. I love my demon hunter. But you are stuck with 1 dps and 1 tank option. So you don’t have as much variety. Plus, and this is personal, I’m not a fan of the aesthetic of havoc demon hunters (ironic right).

Demon Hunter is a lot of fun to play. It is a fast pace, with very few cooldowns to manage and it has a lot of survivability. I play the Tank DH, so my dps isn’t really up where the DPS DH is, but I’m usually pulling as many mobs as I can so it doesn’t really matter to much to me.

Plus, the jump, jump, glide is very addictive.

youtube has the answers you seek

DH is good but no one in your group benefits from the plus magic damage debuff they give enemies so mark that one as a no.

Warrior and ret seem to be about the same but ret comes with utility warriors can’t provide. Bubbles and off heals are always a plus.

Other than melee I do like playing as a fire mage. Seeing the big procs always feels great lol. In the end I want a class that’s gonna compliment my group very well.

You’re a monk fsho
Now go

I guess if your looking for a group compliment, then ask your guildies which one they like the best. I have at least one of all the classes you suggested. The only thing I would recommend is to pick the one that feels natural to you.
