Which books to start?

Greetings. My son is 12 and for Christmas has asked for adventure books as he’s long passed Jack and Annie as well as Mocking Bird (or whatever that movie was called). His exact text asked for graphic novels.
I was thinking that since he’s dabbled with this game all his life basically, then what better books to get him.
What is the very first book, or series of books that started the lore of WoW? Would he be better off starting with the scourge/Lich King, or should I take him back to the start? Honestly I may read these books as well.
If you don’t mind, I would love to hear everyone’s feedback as where to start.
Thanks so much !

I started with Rise of the Horde. It was a good place to get going for everything that started it all. If you started with Arthas it might be a little hinky. IT goes all the through his childhood to being Lich King. But if he already knows the context no problem.

I started with Day of the Dragon which I read back in Middle School. I then went on to read the War of the Ancients Trilogy. I think either should be fine for your son’s reading level, though they aren’t exactly graphic novels.

There is a Warcraft Manga that I also read in Middle School called the Sunwell Trilogy, but I do not remember whether it was any good.

Does rise of the Horde basically coincide with the dark portal?

Rise of the Horde is everything leading right up the creation of the Dark Portal.

Personally, I started with War Crimes, as it came out around the time I started really getting interested in WoW, and it’s also one of the few novels that’s actually necessary to understand a story gap between expansions.

Although I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it as a first read, I still think it’s worth taking a look at regardless; preferably once / if you have the appropriate context for it
