An interesting and uniqueness concept would be select your runes. Final choice. No changing, no second thoughts, do your research. The runes equipped stay equipped on your toon for the life of that toon. Whether its moved to cata, or its own server pop, or even retail. It will be a unique toon blended into the other server population.
Just a thought, no need to get all huff and puff about an imagination for a made up world.

I don’t want retail in classic either, both games serve their purpose.
I’m doing the same thing. Leveling multiple characters on sod and one currently on Era. Hoping to get the option to transfer all my SOD characters to classic ERA. Hope those who like SOD aren’t let down and they give us a choice. You can either take your characters to some type of classic+ server or forfeit all runes and new gear and clone to Era. If they do I will have 6 60s on era which will keep me entertained for a long time. I can’t help but think though if this is really a live beta wouldn’t that mean they will eventually release a real Classic + version after. Would seem weird that everyone already has multiple characters to 60 if that’s the case. My biggest fear is they’re sent to retail. Then this will definitely be a huge waste of time for me anyways. Time will tell.
I imagine they will be removed like seasonel diablo characters.
Personally i’m not going to continue sinking time into SOD with no actual confirmation of where all of our characters that we have put hours if not days of time into are going. All the grinding in p3 has made me realize this is a large time gate with no actual determination of the future. I suspect blizzard wont confirm anything until SOD is basically over holding people hostage till the end.

Season of Mastery players were able to transfer to Classic Wrath so I imagine it will be something like that.
SoM characters were 100% able to transfer on Classic Era realms. Get rid of class items/runes/any special SoD flavor themed thing, and revert the boosted tier pieces to their original values, I don’t see the big deal honestly, Era is 90% GDKPs and 75% slower combat. At least people get to keep the time investment they made.
Looking Forward
Finally, many Classic players have asked what will happen at the end of the Season of Mastery, and here’s the answer. When Season of Mastery concludes, you’ll have the option to permanently transfer your character to an existing Classic Era realm in your region. This free service will become available for a limited time at the conclusion of the season.
