I’ve just started playing again and I was squished down to lvl 45. How should I go about reaching 50? As I haven’t done any of the new battle for azeroth quests, would I start off with getting xp equivelant to a lvl 10?
or should I be going back to the old content to lvl?

If you were horde I’d say Silverpine. No clue on Alliance. I took my max rested 45 rogue and knocked it out in no time at all. I remember specifically looking at it right before I leveled twice. Lvl 48 to 49 took 11m23s and 49-50 took 14min.
If ally has an older starter area like that, I’d honestly try it out over WoD; most people gonna tell you to just go to gorgrond.
Do battlegrounds.
Click Draenor on Chromie time and go do the Draenor intro. See where that puts you.
If you haven’t done any bfa quests making you don’t have a level 50, you’ll have to quest in bfa zones, chromie time won’t be available to you.
No. Experience scales to your level. You can go to pretty much any zone you want.
You got no choice but to do the BfA Quest to get to level 50.
