hey all, ive got some alts that were leveled to 50 back in the bfa days and kind of abandoned, their ilvl now seems equivalent to like level ~30 gear (im assuming due to level squish) and its been rough to try and do any dungeons without trolling and getting oneshot to every single mech, what’s the best way to get some up to date gear to spam dungeons aside from AH, some of the pieces are a bit too expensive :x
is there perhaps a vendor somewhere that i missed? TIA
They rescaled ilvl in Dragonflight. (I suspect the idea was to have a more even progression from 1-60 instead of the previous scaling which was pretty flat to 50 then shot up rapidly.) It is an issue for people coming back with old end game gear from previous expansions that didn’t get bumped up with the change.
If you don’t want to power through dungeons while underleveled, here are a few options:
Heirloom gear is going to be the easiest option if you’ve got it. It’s useful enough that it’s probably worth spending some gold on some key pieces like weapons if you don’t already have them. Especially if you have lots of alts.
If the characters haven’t done them already, questing in Legion (or even WoD) with Chromie Time off will likely provide upgrades. You want Chromie Time off so you get the overlevel bonus which will counteract your low gear. The rewards are still decent. (WoD quests reward gear in the mid-90s ilvl-wise with Chromie Time off, I’m not sure about Legion, but it will be a bit higher.)
When someone else had a similar problem I also tested out doing some WoD raids. They’re doable (but may be slow) in terrible gear at 50 (I actually tested on a level 46 character at ilvl 38) and the ilvl dropped is pretty decent.
Be sure you are in Chromie time with the alts before queing for dungeons. You’ll only be able to queue for that xpac’s dungeons but the scaling will be kinder than trying outside Chromie time dungeon running.
The only difference in scaling between Chromie Time and regular time is that in Chromie Time things scale to 59, whereas without it they’ll only scale up to an expansion’s natural cap. (And once you’re 5 levels past that cap you get an overlevel bonus that makes the content way easier.)
Chromie Time is the only way to queue for dungeons outside of BfA, and many expansions have more forgiving dungeons mechanics-wise, which can make the easier. (Outside of bugs/missed scaling problems, mob HP and damage output should be similar between expansions, though)
I decided to take a peak. I checked on a level 60 character (no Chromie Time) and a level 53 character with Pandaria selected in Chromie time. Both saw ilvl 81 gear, so it looks like it caps at the level 35 gear level. That’s still going to beat out most old gear before the late end game BfA gear, so is probably worth checking out for returning players stuck with low ilvl as a first step.
The vendors in question have the “Adventuring Supplies” tag — here are the Wowhead search results for a list of them.
