I’ve seen so many white knights attempting to defend Blizzard’s previous pre-expansion events saying there was never anything special about them, which is a complete lie. We have had so many engaging pre-expansion events with several quests and sometimes even scenarios to pave the way for the new story. The only update to the current pre-expansion event was the adjustments Blizzard made to the event timer and the boss HPs. A couple quests from Khadgar to help Alleria and a 3-step quest to check in on Magni then meet Khadgar back in Dalaran is hardly content. I’m frustrated because I have historically always looked forward to pre-expansion events to generate hype, but there has literally been zero hype from them this time.
We did?
Tell me of the Cata pre-launch event, Usul.
Lol no we haven’t
Most of them have been exactly like this, if not less.
And honestly if they’re going to remove pre-patch content, which they always do, I’d rather it be a few minor breadcrumb quests and a random farm event like this. Getting the War of Thorns cut after the BfA pre-patch was awful, we lost some great story and scenarios.
What all was in the MoP pre-patch?
I generally have a lot I could complain about in WoW, but the pre-event isn’t one of those things.
I haven’t even bought TWW yet, and I probably won’t. But the pre-event makes it easy and convenient to get good gear and level alts. I think that’s fine.
I will never forgive them for this, especially since they kept in the Battle for Lordaeron… Why couldn’t the War of Thorns just been a phase instance of Dark Shore that you could skip like most introductory questlines after the first playthrough?
Too late now, early access is in 2 days and the expansion officially comes out for the rest on the 26th.
I, for one, enjoyed this event. I prefer playing Horde, but for years/a decade, all my friends have been Alliance mains so I’ve resigned myself to playing Alliance with them. I used this event to level up every single class I enjoy maining as Horde instead of leveling the old fashioned way or paying for character boosts/faction changes.
Either you are all straight up being dishonest or you just began playing. Below is the list of previous pre-expansion events we had that actually had some content.
- BfA: The burning of Teldrassil and the battle outside Undercity
- Legion: The demon invasions and Broken Shore event
- WoD: The Dark Portal / Iron Horde invasion
- MoP: Theramore’s fall
- Cataclysm: The Shattering
- WotLK: the legendary Zombie invasion
What are some specific examples you had in mind and what about them made them better?
I mean, no offense, but if TWW only offers a third Dwarf recolor and a few long-overdue QoL changes as “features”, then you can’t really expect them to put much effort into the pre-event. As I said, it’s okay for what it is. With the declining quality, that’s just what you have to expect.
For starters, I actually enjoyed the pre-BfA events. Being able to take part in the battle against Sylvanas and the burning of Teldrassil with great cinematics felt really engaging. The other events were actually exciting. I feel like this time it was just a bunch of randomness thrown together disguised as “memories” and we’re told to just run around and kill them. No real story, no explanations. Boring.
I believe we also had 5 animated shorts which were really cool. I think we got 2 this time.
When it comes to wow, especially pre-expac content, the rule of thumb is ‘expect nothing and nothing will disappoint’.
This has been on my mind as well and frankly I’ve been trying to keep my expectations for the expansion itself real low because of it.
I’m waiting to see if they announce anything during Gamescom. If not, I’ll just skip TWW. I don’t feel like throwing my money away.
Some of the events you listed were just the introductions to the expansion that we were allowed to do earlier, but were not the prepatch events. Every Pre-Patch event has been removed from the game, which shouldn’t always be the case.
Burning of Teldrassil was the pre-launch event and was removed. The Battle for Lordaeron can still be completed AFAIK, but why was one of these two things removed? They’re both massive plot points that should never have been removed.
Demon Invasions were great, but not that much different than what we currently have. The Broken Shore event was the intro to Legion, so it’s still available and was not prepatch content.
I honestly don’t remember there being a whole lot to do with the Iron horde invading the Blasted Lands… It was just some quests for a toy and then they let us do the new Upper Blackrock Spire early.
Still doable in game and wasn’t much of an event.
The old world changing was not a prepatch event, it was just the 1-60 rework being implemented before the 80-85 content. The PreLaunch events for Cata were the Battle for Gnomeregan and the Sen’jin isles, both rewarding toys. As well as elemental invasions within SW, Org, TB and IF all of which were heavily complained about at the time because it interrupted the ability to use the Auction House and Bankers.
Wasn’t here for this so I won’t comment.
The War Within’s pre-launch event isn’t really all that different from the actual pre-launch events when you separate the pre-launch content, and the introduction experience of the expansion, since they are two different things. The reason we didn’t get the full Intro to Khaz Algar for the War Within will be obvious when you complete it.
Perhaps the radiant echoes are a walk down memory lane because November will be the 20th anniversary of WoW.
Or maybe it’s just a bunch of randomness thrown together.
New dungeons and raids is all I need, wow is the only mmo with decent end game
Yeah, the rest will just be the same as always. If that’s enough for you, then good for you.
That’s an interesting point I didn’t consider…they did pick LK and Ragnaros, two of some of the most memorable former raid bosses. I guess Onyxia as well. Certainly seems to be some merit in what you said.
The Broken Shore scenario was released before the actual expansion for a few weeks. Yes it was changed later to be included as part of the storyline later, but it was still a pre-expansion event. ref: https://www.wowhead.com/guide/legion/pre-patch-demon-event
No, they were both pre-launch events, not just the Burning of Teldrassil. One was for Horde and one for Alliance.
The problem is that there isn’t any explanation for why we’re fighting random memories. They’re just wandering around aimlessly in 1 of 3 zones and we just go spank them. Rinse and repeat. No story, no witty side clues, no explanations. Feels awfully lazy to me.
This is also the 2nd weekly reset in a row without any additional quests or content having been added. The pre-expansion “event” is also still the same, and not a single new quest.
This is not true. There were Horde and Alliance versions of both.
Except the quests explain it? I’ll admit it’s not the greatest but they do explain Azeroth is reaching out for aid and in doing so, is also reawakening echoes of the past. Does feel more like an anniversary event
There’s still more quests to come, there’s an introduction experience just like every other pre-launch event, we just don’t get to do it early because how it ends takes us directly to Khaz Algar.
The introduction experience is us fighting of Xal’atath and Nerubians that are invading Dalaran, at the end, we fail, and Dalaran crashes into the shore of the Isle of Dorne, we don’t get to do this early because how the event ends, we land on Khaz Algar. It wouldn’t make sense for us to see that early, to be teleported back to the mainland, only to be teleported back to Khaz Algar a week or two later to jump into the zone content.
I’d say there’s equal amount of content, it’s just presented differently. BfA’s was truly an exception to the rules, and quite frankly they did us dirty by removing the War of Thorns from the game.
