Where does a Person go for Help for the Game?

I apologize for the rant, and I won’t lie, a little vitriol is gonna come out with this one, but I’d like to ask for assistance from the community. TL;DR is this: Where does a person go for builds, addon assistance, and overall, being a better player? And what in the seven hells is WeakAuras all about?

So, I attempted the Dawn of the Infinite Dungeon tonight via PuG, and let’s say… it didn’t go well. I think that’s the nice way to put it. Now, I will take note that I am an ungemmed, unenchanted, complete waste of oxygen, but that’s part of my problem here. Where do people go for assistance nowadays?

Every person I’ve talked to in my guild, and in my previous, seems to have the same reaction: When someone asks for assistance or advice, they have no way to actually put it into words, or refuse to. I had a guildie agreed that I suck, and then had no idea of where to direct me for Paladin advice (all 3 specs, mind you).

One of my guildies who is always eager to link WowAnalyzer to stroke his ego never seemed to notice that the Paladin analyzer was still running on Shadowlands information when Vault of the Incarnates was the main raid, so I stopped listening on that front long ago - it looks like they have people now, but is it worth it to review?

I remember Icy Veins being useful back in the day, but when I go there now, it’s obvious some of those articles are just copy pasted, written by AI, or just very poorly written in general (the fishing guide, for example, still reads like a train wreck).

WoWHead is still quite the site, it seems, but even there, I find my faith in external information faltering. There are pages for quests and rares that feel like the community has given up completely.

Finally, and this is old age talking, but what is up with WeakAuras? I read about it online and still have not come up with a clear answer as to what it does. As far as I can tell, it helps track timers, and that’s it? I keep reading about the ‘versatility’ and how this addon will do everything but transform your computer into a catgirl maid who will make you English breakfast, and yet when I tried it, I didn’t get any information from it that I deemed useful. Is it supposed to be used instead of addons like DBM and BigWigs?

So, all ranting out of the way, Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind. Where should a person go to learn more about how to play? What enchants to use? How to use newer addons from the ground up? (I’m still on Recount, and I’m still dying on that hill).

Mahalo,

Nivan

start out right on these forums imo, since you’re here.

class forums are usually a pretty friendly place to answer your questions, and direct you from there…GD is a mixed bag - i don’t think many of the people in this forum (specifically) even play the game

if you have a specific question about mechanics or strategy, the dungeon forums have some experienced players from pretty much any class/spec.

This part of the forums should be deleted in my opinion.

Checking out class discords can be a good option as well OP.

  • Use Deadly Boss Mods addon. It alerts you in dungeons when mechanics are coming up.

  • Decent talent builds on method dot gg (I can’t add links to posts). Use a single target raid build for most DoTI bosses IMO, it’s more of a raid. You can swap to AoE for trash.

  • This next one can be a bit of a crutch, but can also teach you how your rotation works. It’ll show you what an “ideal” rotation might look like - look up the Hekili add-on on Curseforge. Go to a dummy and bang on it a bit, and then readjust your bars if need be to be comfortable with the rotation and offensive cooldowns.

  • Don’t click your abilities, get used to your hotkeys. You don’t click abilities, right?

  • Make sure you’re using the correct consumables and your gear is enchanted etc (consumables and enchants into on method dot gg)

  • Watch a guide on YouTube before doing Dawn of the Infinites next time so you get a sense of the mechanics (To save time you can listen at 1.5x or 2x).

Let me know if you have any other questions

The low hanging fruit are Wowhead and Icy Veins. They have build guides, rotation guides, gear guides, strategy guides, etc. etc.

There’s a lot of specialty sites (raidbots if you want to sim your character, for example).

But Icy Veins and Wowhead will take you far.

If you want to start off with gameplay the first thing should be to find a good guide specified for your class. Since you’re holy atm I would suggest going to Ellesmere, his hpal guide can be found at wingsisup .com. Wowhead has passable guides for most specs, but never consider any of them complete.

Gearing is a lengthy process and a lot of people will throw around simulations and websites for maximized efficiency, I recommend throwing all of that in the trash until you reach a Mythic Raid item level (441+ currently). For all item slots except trinkets prioritize just increasing ilvl until you get to challenging content. For trinkets it is best to consult guides or use warcraft logs to check what high level players are using.

For boss addons, stick with bigwigs and add the voice pack to have it announce mechanic names until you are familiar with each. Dbm is too fond of awful sound effects like air horns.

It is a good idea to start learning how to work with weakauras but it isn’t required. WA is an addon that tracks conditions in the game and responds with alerts. It is incredibly customizable, many raid teams use it to have announcements for all lf their major raid cooldowns so an actual raid leader isn’t necessary. This addon can track buffs like bloodlust, procs like infusion of light, or just warn you when your wings are ready to ne used again. Most players use it to reduce cognitive load as the game rises in complexity. I would only recommend doing this after you have gotten to around m+11 or into heroic raiding though. If the basics aren’t muscle memory, all of these addons will just be noise.

If you have more questions it is also a good idea to direct them to your class forums or class discord (hammer of wrath). The general forums are usually pretty unruly and unhelpful.

Honestly, I think youtube is one of the best. And no, I don’t mean sensationalistic stuff like from Bellular (tbf, I have found useful information in his videos with regards to how systems work or what upcoming items do). But there’s plenty of vids from all sorts of people for all different forms of content. A lot are probs gonna be crap. But there’s a lot of really good stuff too. A big benefit (to me, at least) is actually being able to see what’s going on. But then…

Wowhead also has stuff like dungeon and class guides.
Subcreation shows what the good builds are.
There’s info and help to be had here but you might have to filter through noncustructive/troll posts.
Guilds, communities, and Discords if you’re feeling social.
Raidbots lets you find whats best for your toon.

Don’t be hard on yourself, homie. You don’t know what you don’t know and that’s not a bad thing. The fact that you’re seeking more information puts you a cut above many, imo.

I think the issue is that there’s probably too much information out there and it can be incredibly overwhelming as a new player.

I don’t know if it’s the optimal way but I started using the ‘Starter’ talent build just to get a grasp of my character. Then I choose the IcyVeins easy build/s and practice that. Eventually went off Murlok io because that is updated daily very visual.

The class discords tends to be incredibly useful IMO. You could ignore all the above steps and join one of those - they usually have a lot of existing guidance and discussion for new players.

Holypally is pretty broken rn and so I’ve healed the mega dungeon at 410 ilvl on mine, but I’ve done it on all three roles every week so I know when damage is incoming. It’s annoying looking at talents on WoW profiles, but it looks like you have the important ones.
MEGADUNGEON
For some tips on the mega dungeon starting from the beginning the trash packs have three adds to note leading up to the first boss.
The Chronoslicer or whatever which will enrage that you have to stun and then dispel the debuff on the tank
The Chronomender which will cast chronomelt which will do heavy damage
The dragon thing which teleports and casts an AoE bladestorm for heavy damage
In all cases it is better to either stun/int/move out then to heal as preventing damage is better then healing.
1st BOSS
The 1st boss has three mechanics of note an AoE stomp, a jumping stomp, and Chronoshear
The AoE stomp will spawn do moderate AoE damage to all members of your group and spawn a puddle under them you guys should just try to conserve space.
The Jumping Stomp will target a party member, get out of the stomp AoE and then after he is done jumping it will spawn a ring of sand that goes out, try not to get hit but if you do whatever and if you are not the next person being targeted by the stomp just make sure to get into the small circle that spawns after the impact to soak.
Chronoshear will do heavy damage to the tank and then put a debuff on them which makes them take extra damage, heal the shield absorption and then dispel the tank.
2nd Boss Trash
The crags will cast a spell try to interrupt them, but other then that if the tank pulls small then it’s just an hps check/dispel for certain mobs.
2nd Boss
This boss also has three mechanics, unwind, orbs, and a dispel, and you just gotta learn the dance, if it helps the meele hitbox on the boss is huge so you can stand fairly far back. There is also the fast/slow zones or light/dark just try to stay in the dark zone.
Unwind will hit the tank as a frontal so try not to stand near the tank too much
Orbs will spawn around the boss going in a circle outward, these can get tricky due to the rotating time zones, but like I said don’t be afraid to go far out as the hitbox for the boss is fairly large. You really just gotta learn the dance here.
Next is the dispel mechanic where two people get a debuff on them which must be cleansed or worn out in the fast zones.
3rd Boss Trash
The dragons get a stacking debuff every time a slime is killed near them which increases their damage done, the mob should either be cced or soothed.
3rd Boss
This is kind of tricky but in general as a rule if you are the healer try not to have the orb, next the only things you have to watch as a healer is in the 2nd phase and 3rd phase.
The 2nd phase dragon will do a storm mechanics which pushes people back and does damage which should be healed by using cds.
The 3rd phase someone will get hit by necrofrost which should be destroyed or use blessing of freedom on them.
Other then that just stay out of the stuff on the ground and stay out of the frontal the fire dragon does in the 3rd phase.
4th Boss Trash
Not much to say here, it’s very similar to the first boss trash.
4th Boss
This fight becomes way easier the higher dps you have and the better dps you have which know how to use defensives.
He has 4 mechanics he will cast in order the big AoE blast, the rock barrage, earthsurge, and a frontal.
The person targeted by the big AoE blast should get into the bubble chromie teleports on to them and everyone else should get out. This will put a bleed on the target so make sure to remember they are taking damage.
Next he will cast rock barrage which will spawn two circles one on chromie and one in front the tank should stand in the circle in front and the dps in the circle on chromie. Be ready to use cds for this as it is heavy AoE damage. Make sure to heal chromie after this mechanic too.
Next he will cast earthsurge which sends out rocks, don’t get hit by them and if your dps are good it will only last like 2-3 waves. Throw out some heals as the group takes moderate AoE damage.
Next he will cast a frontal try to get everyone on the same side as it will spawn adds that need to be focused down.
At 100 energy chromie will teleport to the middle and spawn a bubble which everyone has to get into, dps then have to do their job and dps the boss quickly before he finishes his cast. If he gets to 0 energy then the fight is over.
That’s half the dungeon if you want I can do the other half.

On how to heal as holypally instead of beacon of faith pick up the other one, beacon of virtue, which effects all member on a 15s cd. Now the reason holypally is strong is because they have 3 really strong cds on a 1 min cd so you can essentially full heal your groups easily.
One is casting beacon of virtue, avenging crusade, then throwing out a judgement, hammer of wrath, crusader strike, word of glory etc…
The next is casting tyr’s delieverance (not necessary but good if the fight doesn’t require movement and you can get the cast off if you know damage is coming etc…), beacon of virtue, divine toll, and daybreak which should heal your group to full.
Finally you get another cd from casting daybreak which is that your next 3 holy shocks cast 2 additional times this allows you to save that if necessary and beacon of virtue, holy shock whoever is low, word of glory another person, and repeat for three times which should full heal your party.
Of course this is just how I play holy pally as it’s most comfortable for me while still being fairly strong. The class discords are good sources of information, but I find they tend to talk heavily on logs and ideal scenarios, and also their main focus is usually raiding. However, there is some good information there.

The best Holy Pally website for information in my own humble opinion is wingsisup. com
It was made by a high M+/mythic raider named Ellesmere.

Ok let’s start w/ this

Read up and have some an understanding on what to do. The guides are very comprehended and will pretty much tell you the best build for content but I suggest read the abilities and understand what they do.

Weakaura is an add on.
https://www.curseforge.com/wow/addons/weakauras-2
and you can get weakaura loadout here
https://wago.io/

It’s generally use to track mob abilities to character abilities to almost anything you can think of that’s not in a hidden aura.
