I remember when MoP was out it was HATED. Everyone complained about the panda theme, the dailies, the plot, the pvp. But now when people talk about old expansions it’s usually the most loved post-Wotlk next to legion. What changed people’s thoughts over time?
It was the 3 minutes of stuns you sat in that gave you time to tab out and read the forums during an arena match. Now the game goes to fast to tab out in arena.
My guess is Blizzard went away from the dailies later in the expansion. Yes they added dailies, but it was no longer choose 25 and miss the rest. New content with dailies was do 3-6 dailies. They also say class design was at its best. I personally wasn’t a huge fan of MoP, but I haven’t been a huge fan of any expansion after WotLK and I also like Cata more than most later expansions.
You don’t realize how good something is until you don’t have it anymore. And a lot of the complaints were over the fact that there were pandas, not the gameplay.
Personally, I started in MoP and loved it before it was cool
People love MoP because usually they started playing in MoP, it’s their vanilla.
Only memelords whine about pandas. Everyone else just kinda went along with it.
The story, raids, systems were OK. I think pvp was alright, but I don’t pvp often.
The dailies sucked, but we’ve almost always had them in some form and they stopped mattering about a month in.
No they didn’t, the expansion wasn’t without its flaws but the small group of people whining about pandas certainly weren’t the majority.
Class design. Or rather, the class design ever since.
mop was pre-prune
it was the last time we had our abilities. enough said
The launch wasn’t great, but they addressed lot of the issues people had with the launch, notably dailies and reps, in future patches, they delivered one of the all time best .2 patches, people got used to the Panda/Asia theme, class design was generally pretty great.
It’s not near the top of my personal list, but its understandable why it’s so beloved.
Oh yeah, classes were pretty great. Warlocks had the most effort put into them in… Ever? With a great class dev and input from all the top warlocks/theory crafters.
Now the class themes are duller and interesting resources/synergies are replaced or simplified.
I remember it as being the first expansion I cancelled my sub cause it just wasn’t fun. I came back when WoD was out.
Oopsie I was wrong!
a time traveler.
Nothing in my mind changed: MoP was a glorious expansion. I loved it then, I still love it. It & WotLK remain the high points of WoW, & not even Legion – which was pretty good – can hold a candle to either of those.
Compared to them, IMO Shadowlands was a waste of my time & money.
MOP came out in 2012.
The hate was largely a fringe group of people going ‘lawl panda’ after they fixed the rep problem, especially once ToT came out.
MoP had easily the best class design, the best PVP season of all time, Throne of Thunder - easily one of the best raids they ever made, absolutely was brimming with content in the overworld, professions were interesting and the storytelling wasn’t an embarrassment.
Compare all of that to now, are you surprised it’s missed? I’m not.
I even made a Panda as a joke, and they became my favorite race.
mop had the greatest ability to ever exist: symbiosis
that alone made mop the best expac. better than wrath, and leagues above the rest
Everyone did not complain. Some did (and loudly), but I think most really enjoyed it. I know I did.
As has already been stated…I think classes were in a good place in MOP and I , personally, enjoyed playing through the stories which I thought were far better written than some since then.
I look, fondly, back at MOP after the last few expansions and wish we could experience progression like we did back then.
JMO
The pvp was only considered bad the first season and afterwards most people highly enjoyed pvp and s15 was super fun. I had like 5 alts and I didn’t do dailies unless I wanted to.
i try to forget about wod too. xD
