Where are the races from?

From a lore perspective, where do the races of Azeroth come from?

I know Dwarves were originally stone beings

Gnomes were originally mechanical beings

Orcs/Draenei come from other planets

And High Elves came from trolls, and then branched off into Night Elves, Blood Elves, Void Elves, etc…

However, where do the other races come from?

Where are humans from?

Where do tauren come from?

Or trolls? I’ve been told trolls are the only race not created by the Titans. So does that mean all elves are non-titan creations?

Is there a lore website I could read up on all these things? I really love reading about the lore of Azeroth, and would be very interested in the origins of all the races

Humans came from Vrykuls, which in turn came from the stone Vrykul guys much like how Dwarves came to be.

Vrykul

Brann believes they originated from a bull ancient or something from the emerald dream

So humans are an evolved form or vrykul, which come from Titan creation. That’s pretty cool

What about trolls? Where are they from?

It’s believed they originated around the well of eternity during more primordial times. I mean before the well got all green They’re not made from titans or old gods.

  • The Human ancestry is basically…
The Titan’s creation, the Iron Vrykul > Yogg-Saron’s Curse of Flesh Vrykul > Said curse eventually caused Vrykul children to become “deformed” creating Humans.
  • Tauren come from the Yaungol on Pandaria. Blizzard has retconned the Tauren origin story to hell and back, there is no clear story of it.
  • Trolls are indicated to be one of the few non Titanic races on Azeroth. Their origins are unknown, perhaps one of the first mortal races when the Big Bang of Azeroth occurred.

As for your question about some sort of lore compendium, I don’t know. Both of the WoW wikis are heavily outdated in regards to several articles.

Wow, so humans are deformed, cursed vrykul offspring

That’s awesome!

So trolls and by relation, elves are their own races? It’s kind of cool, and it also makes me wonder if elves affinity for magic could possibly be because the trolls may have originated from the well.

Sort of like magic is in their DNA

I need a lore website! I have so many questions!! :weary::weary:

I just use Wowpedia. Take it with a grain of salt because its out of date.

The Mogu and Tol’vir are also originaly stone based Titan creations made flesh by the Old God’s curse.

And indirectly Troggs and Grummels are too. Troggs are corrupt versions of the Earthen and the Grummel were Troggs that the Mogu used their life magic on to create a servant class.

Wowpedia is a good place to get general lore info if there’s anything you want to know more about.

To tie in with this, IIRC the Saurock were also creations of the mogu from local lizards.

Trolls are one of the original races of Azeroth, probably evolving from some animal. The ones who came to the well became night elves as Elune shaped them in her form so night elves are like made of a goddess from the first trolls who started to worship her.

The only race we really have no clue about and can say just evolved like humans did IRL is draenei.

I honestly suspect titan intervention in the Draenei. You don’t just grow up on a titan soul world without some kind of titan shenanigans going on in your evolutionary history.

I was expecting we would learn they came from Argus constructs or that Argus looked like a Draenei or something when we went there but nope, even with Argus’ soul there didn’t seem to be any constructs or anything. Would be cool if we ever returned to other parts of the planet and learned more.

I do too

I think their spaceships and technology are based on Titan design as well

No other race has shown themselves capable of space travel like the Draenei

Conversely, no other race has shown themselves as capable of crashing into things as the Draenei.

Genedar? Crashed (in two different timelines!).

Exodar? Crashed.

The alliance submarine during Cata? Crashed dead on into the giant squid.

The Xenedar?.. Technically that was AA fire, but still, it crashed too.

Why else do you think Velen’s keeping the Vindicaar on station in high orbit rather than bringing it into weapons range for precision strikes on the horde with relativistic weaponry?

I suspect the Naaru had a part to play in the evolution of the Draenei.

Blood Elf and High Elf are the same, Kael’thas Sunstrider renamed us Blood Elves after Arthas invaded Quel’thalas but otherwise there’s no physical difference at all between us and those who still call themselves High Elves.

I think he’s keeping it for when they finally get tired of the Horde vs Alliance BS, and they can just bail on this whole garbage can of a planet lol

Sorry, I meant highborne, like what the naga were before becoming all fishy. The elves that the high elves, and night elves branched off from

Humans were from curse of flesh Stormforged Vrykul, Dwarves were from curse of flesh Earthen Dwarves, Gnomes were from curse of flesh Mechagnomes. The Mogu and Tol’vir also fall under this category of curse of flesh beings created by the Titans, but they are not playable.

Orcs were from devolving stone creatures from Draenor, no Old Gods involved.
Draenei are Eredar that fled their homeworld of Argus, but with Argus being a Titan, we don’t know if the Draenei are naturally born like the orcs, or were placed on the planet like the Tauren, Trolls, and Pandaren.

Tauren, Trolls, and Pandaren were placed on Azeroth by the Titans to help nurture the World Soul. Many other creatures fall under this category as well, like the Kobold, Quillboar, Harpies, Centaur, Gnolls, Murlocs, and many other of the myriad of beast races on Azeroth. It is likely that the Hozen, Vulpera and Sethrak also fall under this, but is not confirmed.

The Night Elves were from dark and forest trolls that settled around the Well of Eternity that was formed after the Titans ripped Y’Shaarj out of Azeroth. These trolls were changed magically by the Well. The High Elves came from Night Elves that continued to live in proximity to the Well’s energies through the Sunwell, which was created by a vial of the Well of Eternity’s water poured into a spring in a distant land after the first Cataclysm from the Wells collapse. The Blood Elves are just High Elves that suffered mana addiction due to living with the Sunwell for so long and no longer having it after Arthas decimated their lands. Many Blood Elves turned to fel magic to sate their thirst for magic. Void Elves are just Blood Elves that turned to using the void magic like Alleria. And the Nightborne are similar to Blood Elves, as they stem from Night Elves who remained in constant contact with high amounts of magical energies through the Nightwell. I dont know if we have an exact origin of the Nightwell, but it is probably related to the Well of Eternity like the Sunwell and the Spring from the Vale of Eternal Blossoms are. Jinyu also fall under this category of being changed by the Springs from the Vale of Eternal Blossoms, as they are evolved Murlocs.

The Goblins/Gilblins and Pygmies came from Hobgoblins. Hobgoblins were slaves to the Trolls and forced to mine Kajamite, an odd mineral that makes life forms smarter. The Hobgoblins eventually became smarter than the Trolls that had enslaved them, and reversed the roles. At some point, during or after this change, most Hobgoblins became Goblins. Gilblins are just Goblins that somehow adapted to living in the water.

Kul’Tiran humans are just humans with some girth from a more rugged lifestyle. Dark Iron Dwarves are just Dwarves that spent more time underground than normal Dwarves, and served Ragnaros, resulting in their skin fading to gray. Zandalari Trolls are just trolls with better posture than our Darkspear friends. Mag’har Orcs are just what Orcs used to be before drinking from the Blood of Manoroth, which most of the original Orcs from Draenor partook in with very few exceptions. Lightforged Draenei are just normal Draenei that are particularly blessed by the Light more than the rest, meanwhile the Broken Draenei are Draenei that have suffered from constant exposure to the Fel and abuse, unlike their Man’ari cousins who embraced the Fel. High Mountain Tauren are normal Tauren that were blessed by Cenarius. Junker Gnomes are not Mechagnomes, and I dont care what they tell you they are. Junker Gnomes are just normal every day Gnomes that turned themselves into Cyborg Gnomes. And the Forsaken are just dead humans that were raised to serve the Scourge, and later continuously raised to serve the Banshee Queen Sylvannas.

The Saurok were created by the Mogu with the Forge of Wills, and are the only race we are aware of that has been created by a minor race (Not the Titans, Old Gods, or just the buildup of the Element of Spirit).

The various insectoid creatures like the Mantid, Aqir, Qiraji, Silithid, and Nerubians were created by the Old Gods to serve them as slaves and soldiers, though the Aqir are the predecessors of the others. The Qiraji and Silithid serve C’Thun, the Mantid serve Y’Shaarj, and the Nerubians serve Yogg’Saron (Until Arthas killed many of them and made them serve him instead).

There are plenty more races, but I believe Ive got all of the big ones in here.

To answer your original question, trolls were in fact created by the Titans as stated above as one of the original races of Azeroth. And the Night Elves came before the High Elves, not the other way around
