The gap doesn’t matter. Nothing that will be released this expansion requires min/maxing with fire locks lol.
The only people who need to worry about being top dps are speed runners and world first guilds. Otherwise you are just breaking your back to be the same as everyone else, on top of not playing what you wanna play. The trade off isn’t worth it to clear kara 15 minutes faster for most people I’d wager.
Its not that i want to really min max… I just want to make sure im pulling my weight around for the team. Im already top dps in fights where im not having to do cc and seed on imps. Just want to be a good team player.
So I went thru this same question from the start, ill tell you my story…
So fire is the king of the lock specs till around T6, but has a few caveats, one being you need a fire mage at all times to truly pump, second its absolute trash for questing or any solo play. Second best is Demo (yes I’m aware sims and logs don’t always reflect this, but at start this was the case and sim wise it was) Demo is wonderful for every form of play (sans pvp I think) you can pump in raids and obvs solo and questing are top tier, Shadow destro is right behind it, but trash for solo and questing farming etc, Affy is behind that with mediocre play in raids and dungeons but prob best in solo play. With all this being said, im still Felguard spec, but are about to swap to shadow destro for Kara. I will swap to felguard for Gruul/Mag as it’s way better there imo. The bonus to running “shadow” is you can swap freely between Shad destro, Felguard and Affy. So imo I would pick up Felguard/Shadow Destro as it is probably the most versatile, don’t go fire, you will be pigeonholed into one spec. Another reason I’m swapping to shadow destro is its simming higher for me now due to gear changes, about 200 more than Felguard with my particular group comp. Yeah, the big thing is is that im ALWAYS running with a Fire Mage as we are still trying to recruit a shadow priest.
I mean if that’s the case I don’t know lol, it’s about flexibility for me, Fire is not flexible at all, and thats ok if you want that!!!
Fire/Destro locks are being carried tho by their fire mages and whoever else is in their group. Like how Fire mages had 99 parses in AQ and Naxx because of ignites.
But speaking as a Affliction lock, Raid teams generally has 1 for curses, DoTs and utility as all the other locks go destro bc they wanna pump. I honestly hate playing it as I enjoy Demonology lock more due to being chonky, but they’re unfortunately not good ‘yet’ until P2 as most of our armor for P1 focuses on Affliction spec (tier 4) or Destro (A bit of tier 4, but mostly the Tailoring sets).
Just wish I could use Agony in my raids to up the DPS but im the one who has to throw out improved Cure of Elements so im SoL. :0)
I’d tread carefully as we approach P2. Most mages will shift to arcane and fire mages will be rare/not highly valued. At that point in your 25s if you have a spriest and several locks you benefit the raid more as shadow for ISB uptime. Fire is only BIS for you specifically and if scorch stacks are up. Time to work on your shadow gear.
Without being an expert I’d say around tier 6 but it does perform decently in the current phase.

Yeah one thing to add is you def need a shadow priest in your grp for any of the shadow warlock specs. T5 may prove interesting for demo I will also add, its main issue can be the pet takes alot of damage till you master his positioning, the T5 2pc heals him, so we may see even more value from Demo. Whatever you choose have fun!!!

Honestly theres a heap of improvement on my part to make + some gear im still missing cause kara hates me.

I feel you, my grp has a terrible time with some bosses, Shade has destroyed me parsing decently, im gonna roll Shadow destro this week see if I can parse better, but Demo can pump for sure in Kara, just have to pay a healer to pay attention to him lol
The crafted sets are fire/arcane and shadow/frost
That’s why I asked.
I’d go Shadow just for the flexibility, but I’m also the person who’d rather be the raid’s Affliction lock. It’s a more engaging spec and more useful, and I’m not much of a meter-chaser.
