When is it time to hang up the video game hat?

Just wondering about what everyone thinks about this. I’m just shy of 43 and I still play ‘video games’ daily, almost daily, etc… I don’t see myself quitting any time soon. Eventually there may come a time, but when will that be? I can see myself logging in, not just to WoW, but other games for a long long while. Is there an age where you have to give it up?

When you cease getting enjoyment from it. I’m older than you.

Video games might had this “children toy” status years ago but now its a staple part of media just like TV, music and movies. Would you say you are getting too old to consume those things? Of course not. Its the same with video games.

I enjoy video games like some people enjoy watching the bachelor. Its your free time so do what you want with it.

I have met people on wow that are well into their 80s playing the game. And i would imagine elderly homes in the future will need some beast computers with amazing internet in the future :stuck_out_tongue:

Pretty much this. I know of an old woman well into her elder years who still diligently plays Skyrim, modding it and doing all sorts of things to change the game up whenever she wants.

There’s games that cater towards younger people. And there’s games that cater towards older ones. It’s just a matter of how much enjoyment you get out of playing them still.

I ask because I can’t imagine my 79yo mother playing them. That would just be weird. I can’t help but wonder if I will still be when I am her age? I enjoy them and I realize that I am not of an advanced age yet, but someday I may.

I don’t think so.

I have a friend I play with that’s 74, we’ve been playing for years, we met during the MoP expansion.

I’m in my 50’s, still love to game.

I used to be in a guild with a few people in their 60’s, and one woman in her late 70’s.

It’s up to you when to quit gaming, if ever.

I’ve raided with people in their 70’s… you can never be too old for video games.

You are a grown adult who (presumably) makes your own way in life and pays your taxes just like everyone else. With those responsibilities under your belt, you are entitled to a say in what you do in moments of freedom. Nobody here or anywhere else has any say with what you choose to do with your free time so long as it’s within the bounds of legality. Don’t let anybody shame you into thinking there are things you should or should not be doing based on something as trivial as your age.

So, no, there is no age when you should give up playing video games. So long as you enjoy it, keep doing it.

Basically this, I knew someone who was 73 and played WoW years ago, I don’t know about now though.

I’m not talking in a literal sense. I’m talking more of a general sense. I know there are older people who play this and other games. Heck, I still occasionally play CoD with my 17yo son. I used to be better at it than he was, but I can’t hold a candle to him now.

As I mentioned earlier, I couldn’t imagine my 79yo mother logging in to play wow. She still has trouble working her flip phone. I just wonder how I will be when I am that age.

If there is an afterlife im pretty sure they would have some pretty kick butt (darn censoring) gaming rigs up there :stuck_out_tongue:

I don’t see myself stopping anytime soon. If anything, I would play more if I were older (and retired).

They better have internets and big beefy computers in the afterlifesss…

Its a generational thing and not an age thing. We have and will grow up with this technology so its different for us. But who knows maybe 50 years down the line there will be something that we dont understand. “Grandpa cant even work a spaceship so i cant imagine how he would be able to do inter dimensional time travel” :stuck_out_tongue:

You’ll know when it’s time because the games will no longer matter enough to play. BTW, I’m considerably older than 43 and still play

Much better at handling technology. People in the Boomer generation didn’t grow up with technology. Not all of them have been able to adapt.

You did, It shouldn’t be much of a problem to play. You may not be able play at the level you do now or for as long but you can still play.
