When is bad luck just poor game design - Weekly Cache

I cannot be the only one that experiences this, but here we go.

The discussion here is that when something RNG occurs outside of your favour it is considered bad luck by Blizzard design and there is nothing that will be done for it. My question is, where does “bad luck” end and poor design start.

For many of the retail player base that are invested in the game that they subscribe too, we do everything to push our “mains” to the limit and part of this is the weekly cache. You push your keys/PVP for a chance at EPIC loot and progress your character to the maximum potential. You wait that week until that delightful weekly reset happens and you wake up excited to see what awesome loot you have to smash the next piece of content you do.

Unfortunately the “bad luck” RNG roll hits you with a semi-truck made of the 4 pairs of un-optimal hence unusable gloves from these caches you work so hard to get and you are left crippled as a character. Watching all the big characters fly by /spitting on you as you crawl your way to their level.

With these systems on systems like corruption, where you already have to use lower iLVL gear if the corruption is “BIS”, but to also receive the same slot of gear MULTIPLE times and cant even use it because of those better items is inconceivable.

Can there be like a 2 week cooldown on item slots on characters so that characters don’t overlap items when we open the caches that we work each week to get?

Looking to you Devs

Of 7 weeks, I have gotten 4 pairs of useless gloves and 2 trinkets (cant corrupt btw) which of them 1 I sometimes use because its not great in majority of situations.

As there are no true random numbers in computing only simulations there of, we can drop the notion of randomness and consider it spite. :joy:

I feel your pain. I scrapped a 470 belt with 3% leech from this weekly chest. #FeelsBadMan

Because it was perfect until BFA

My record is this:

  • Week 1 - Balefire Branch Trinket - pretty good. One of the best trinkets for arcane spec.
  • Week 2 - level 3 twisted Appendage. Second-rate corruptionforge. Not BiS, but not bad.
  • Week 2 - Ineffable Truth … 3rd worst simming corruption for mages. 1/20 the dps boost of BiS corruption. Total garbage corruption, but at least it was on a higher ilevel weapon.
  • Week 4 - Ineffable Truth on pants. Yuck
  • Week 5 - Ineffable Truth on belt … yuck
  • Week 6 - Glimpse of Clarity - absolute worst corruption for mages. 1/100 the dps boost of the BiS corruption. On ring. Worthless
  • Week 7 - Ineffable Truth on pants. DE

My impression: Started out with some promise, but now I wonder why I even bother to do Mythic+ each week.

That’s not actually true.

Random . org

Randomness is only one factor.

They already know the solution, let players pick from multiple items in the chest. They’re just going to sit on it until Shadowlands.

Its a free chance at gear my god.
Pre-legion you logged into nothing on reset day was that better?
I’m starting to think people think this

Free RNG gear doesn’t hold value compared to gear you work toward and plan on having.

Easy answer for you.

Good, better, best. We don’t experience that. We have Useless, Very Bad, Bad, Neutral, Good, Very Good, Best. There are a lot more opportunities for bad though.

Coming into the expansion it was understood that MORE value would be placed on primary stats and upgrades would be more obvious. We are now seeing the opposite of that. 445 ilvl items with good corruptions are easily beating out 475 pieces. 445 rings with useful stats still beat out 475 rings with useless stats. The list can go on as you are more then aware.

The ‘bad’ design we have now is these items SHOULD be upgrades considering how early in the tier we are.

I have 5 475 items and only 1 of them is okay at best for me. My 460-465 gear in every case is better.

This shouldn’t be the case.

That’s why the RNG now stings just that much more. Not only are we not getting the right stats or the right corruption, but we can’t even use it. They are that bad… That extra layer also makes it that much more difficult to get a good piece that you might be happy with. Get a piece of gear with the right stats, but bad corruption? Still disappointing, especially if its in a slot already occupied by a corrupted piece you do need. Get a great corruption but the wrong stats? That can be frustrating, especially if it’s on a ring where stats are all that matter.

That’s the bad in the design. But… as we all know, it doesn’t stop there.

And that’s where my frustration is right now. I play resto on this druid and of the 5 pieces, 3 of them i’d consider okay for tanking. 1 is for melee dps and 1 is neutral. That’s the disappointing part. Not only am I not getting a corruption I might need, but the stats aren’t right and I’m left carrying around these 475 pieces just to pump up my ilvl. Meanwhile I’m still floating around 468-470 while some of the top druids with better RNG have multiple BIS items from their chest.

As a player, the bad design is also that I have 0 way to affect the outcome of this RNG. Even the spec I primarily use is ignored.

That’s the bad. I just wish I had a tiny bit of control back. I’m bummed that another 475 piece is useless to me, despite putting in the same effort as many other lucky players.

It’s not a “free chance at gear”.

It’s a weekly quest that gives performance-based item level increases. You do a thing to earn the loot, then get screwed by dice rolls.

What you said is objectively wrong.

Pro-tip: If you have to lie about how it works, your argument is bad.

You really miss the point here.

The gear you get from the chest IS the gear that matters. It’s not free gear… it’s the gear you need to improve yourself. Improve you dps, healing, etc. THAT is the gear you’re working for…

Pre-Legion we didn’t have a the loot pinata these days. Gear was a tad harder to get, but once you got it… you weren’t replacing it so quickly. Now you get lots of gear, but only the gear with the right stats and right corruption are what matter.

I totally agree. Really my gripe is with caches in the small portion of the overall bad design. I understand that we will get duplicates or items in the same slot which are just not as optimal and I am happy to accept that if it is spread over larger periods of time.

To say getting 4 pieces of loot in the same slot, 4 weeks in a row (or a very close period) of which you can’t use due to failed systems designs like corruption is “bad luck”, just isn’t an appropriate outlook. There is a point at which it is just flawed and bad design.

Whether people say its free loot, it is a system which they put in to progress a character to an “end state” which some want to achieve to feel accomplished for the game we play, but place people in a crippling disadvantage by not balancing how you can receive that RNG factor.

The further issue to this is, for me where I still want to play the game until SL, I could get the same gear every week until the end if they don’t balance it in someway, and I would never really reach an end state with my character. Leaving myself feeling incomplete and never able to achieve a full potential.

I just hope in SL these things can be looked at for improvement who provide feedback like you and other people

The weekly lootbox needs removed.

The gear needs to come from the dungeons themselves, from their own loot table, for timing high keys.

This is my point be greatful

Free chance of gear is free chance of gear

It is, I also said from the beginning people will cry about it and so far I’ve been right so far.

There should be more buyable Titan Reisen gear from the Etheral vendor.

5k for a 475 piece is just ridiculous.

i raided 2 expansions without getting bracers…

…but we didn’t feel the the need to complain about everything back then :stuck_out_tongue:

Across 2 characters, doing emissaries for their caches and the weekend mythics cache I got pants and belts, the highest items on both characters. The pants was a 460 with a socket and it was crap compared to a 420 with corruption. That felt terrible. I keep getting pants on my paladin and belts on my DH. Its a good time. Random.
