When I was a Noob

The other day I saw a Noob trying to talk with an NPC because he/she thought the NPC was a living player, lol.

This reminded me of when I was a Noob and made my first character, a Troll. The starting area, Echo Isles, has an NPC named Zuni who follows and assist you. If I heard Zuni’s voice-acting then I would have figured out he’s a NPC, but my audio was down real low because other people in the house were sleeping. I couldn’t hear Zuni speak, but I could see the text he was saying to me in the chat box. Because of this, I thought Zuni was a living player and tried chatting to him. I couldn’t figure out why Zuni would sometimes talk to me, then othertimes he would ignore me. I thought, “Maybe this guy can’t see my chat box”. Then, I saw a different player running around with a identicle Zuni. Then I saw another, and another. That’s when I realized… DERP!!! I thought I already had a friend following me and helping me but it was just an NPC.

What funny Noob stories do you have?

I used to think the Eye of Kilrogg warlock spell was a real enemy. I also thought letting my pet kill mobs for me would count.

They didnt.

During Vanilla when I was super noob I would join groups for instances that required attunements. This was also during the days of no summoning stones so everyone had to first get a party together, then make the journey to the instance. It took a very long time. And after making that voyage I occasionally found myself without the attunement or key to the instance. /facepalm

I think I mentioned this story before in the old forums but very early in my sub last summer I was fighting some Gnolls and got too close to the edge of a cliff. I went off the edge and it was a good hard health-draining drop into a Murloc village so Murhaglhaglhaglhaglhaglhaglhagl they jump in along with the Gnolls. Didn’t know the difference between warrior specs at the time, or even about rage management so it was a quick and stupid death.

My two favorite stories that I always tell in these threads are running around Elwynn as a lvl 10 Human Rogue, wearing +int cloth bracers until someone took pity on me and explained stats and armor proficiencies, and when I played Gnome Mage, questing in Westfall around the same time. I didn’t understand kiting so I would cast Frostbolt til the mob was in melee range, then stand there and smack it with my stave while it murdered me. I died a lot and didn’t properly learn to kite for quite some time.

sigh…

I fell into the smelt at IronForge during my first visit there.

A Dwarf…dying in the smelt at IronForge. That’s something a Night Elf might do (with apologies to Night Elf players of course).

This comes from a another forum thread. But, I contend it’s one of the funniest…

This one comes from another forum thread about an EverQuest story, but it’s one of the funniest…

I was invisible and running through the Karanas one day when I noticed a young gnome near the gypsy camp. He was fighting a lion and though it looked like he would win the battle, being a fellow gnome, I decided to help the guy out.

I targeted the lion, clicked on my mesmerize spell, then started to type: “I’m mesmerizing the lion for you.” I got as far as: "I’m " when I realized that I had replaced my mesmerize spell with an Area of Effect mesmerize spell… and that I was standing next to an NPC enchantress. Gulp.

My movement keys are mapped to “w a s d” so I frantically stabbed at my keyboard, trying to MOVE and interrupt the spell.

I forgot that I was still in typing mode.

The gypsy enchantress didn’t like my attempt to mezz her so she promptly charmed me and made me go after the gnome I had been trying to save. I watched in horror as my peace-loving character, knife flailing like a crazed sushi chef, chased the little guy down and stabbed him to death.

I found my victim later and apologized profusely… I even gave him a nice weapon and a piece of armor. He was great about it, and laughed when I told him what happened.

He said he didn’t know WHAT was going on. One minute he was fighting a lion, the next minute a strange gnome appeared out of NOWHERE, announced: “I’m wwwaaaddd”, then sliced him up like Freddy Krueger.

I remember joining a guild and getting my first carry through scarlet monestary. We would park it in one of the rooms and wait while she pulled the whole dang building and blizzard them down. Got my special axe that day.

I also remember being taught how to play blood dps by a warlock in the middle of a dungeon. Good times, good times.

Years ago, when I was a noob…

I used to think my pet roach could die if I fought things with aoe or in dungeons.

So, I would always put him up if I thought I was in risk of losing him.

Something similar happened to me. When I first made this rogue I thought that Darnell was a player that was whispering to me and trying to help me. I told my brother that this guy wouldn’t stop following me and talking to me… but then I realized it was an npc

There was the time I walked from the Eastvale Logging Camp directly to the Burning Steppes certain that was the next place to go. The first time I walked back to my body, then I kept ressing in the graveyard, and dying in the graveyard, while trying to hearth.

I kept getting killed in the graveyard. I logged out for awhile, and then logged back in to body walk my way out of that mess.

I learned very quickly Burning Steppes is not the next logical place after Elwynn Forest.

In Vanilla, I had absolutely no concept of what it meant to ‘farm’. A really nice Orc Warrior took the time to explain that and just about everything else I had asked of him.

I later met him when I was level 60. He was all ‘hey cool man you made it’ and I was really proud of myself to be acknowledged by one-time mentor.

For me and I was new to game it was wearing grey items because I had yet to learn that they were vendor trash and not free worthwhile loot drops.

My first character from day 1 of release was a Tauren hunter. I had no idea about upgrading armor. I found it very difficult to keep leveling and almost gave up on the game. I switched to a Gnome mage (Downhere, Bronzebeard) and mained him through Vanilla after learning how to play.

My Tauren still sits there in his original armor as a memorial to my noob-ness.

Took me way to long to realize you could shift-click to buy more than one reagent at a time.

My first character was a warrior, and i stacked as much intellect as possible because i thought having alot of intellect would help me to outsmart mobs.
