When Did Warcraft Lore Die?

Back when I started, The lore was one of the best things in this game. The stories, The back stories, the characters, the world around them, one of the major allures of this game. When did things go south?

After the hype for Battle for Azeroth died down and we saw what it really was: Random Story Simulator.

Once Ion got his grubby little fingers on the game pretty much.

With Arthas :stuck_out_tongue:

Apparently swords can be plunged into planets without somehow destroying all life.

Characters started dying? Sylvanas gone super villian gone soft? Jaina making wierd love children with hogger?

Sylvanas should’ve died during the siege of icecrown which would’ve made sense for her character, but that’d leave jaina being the big bad?

In a world where there are world killing dragons, gods, a giant burning tree that doesn’t lead to a mini ice age and we can toss fire balls underwater, I have no problem with the sword.

Lore didn’t die. Lore just moved on from everything that was established in the previous games.

It took a concerning turn with WoD, seemed to right itself with Legion a bit, and then flat out floored it off a cliff with BFA and now Shadowlands is the metaphorical watching the car roll down the mountainside.

Personally I’m waiting to see if it explodes during the fall, or after it stops at the bottom (next expansion).

A giant unhinged dragon destroys Azeroth, MoP was a good direction in delving in another part of azeroth we’ve never seen, WoD was when things just got weird, Legion killed off alot of beloved characters which lead to BFA with giant titan sword destroying Silithus and now were chasing Sylvanas in the world of the dead to save the souls from being forever lost in crazy town

I’d say the shark jumping started earlier than that with MoP. Legion can’t exist without the lore of MoP and WoD. But yeah BfA and Slands are nuke the fridge category of WUT.

I suppose, but you can sort of explain that stuff with lolmagic. As far as I’m aware, most of the natural laws still apply. The planet rotates and all that other fun stuff.

A random burst of “re-origination” can wipe all life but the planet being struck by a sword isn’t capable?

A random dragon just flew by and did dragon things like breathing fire and the entire world was changed but this giant sword changed the area in one zone?

BfA… I liked the story up until then. Retconning everyone to be gay or trans doesn’t help either… Yes I said it.

Tell them only that the Lich King is dead, and the lore of this game died with him

If I had to pick a point, I’d say Mists of Pandaria.

All of the previous expansions - Burning Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King, and Catacylsm, they were all founded on natural world-building and made sense. Mists was the start of “Hidden Islands nobody had ever been to for some reason” trend of story-telling, it was the first time WoW broke ranks and tried to deviate from the art style that WoW was founded upon, it didn’t have a strong story focus, etc.

MoP a few things well, but it was pretty obvious that Blizzard’s writers at the time did not know how to write much OC and the only thing of value that came out of that expansion was Siege of Orgrimmar in my opinion.

MoP was so bad lore-wise it basically forced Blizzard to do WoD. So whatever hate you have for WoD should be redirected onto MoP, because MoP made them do it.

Actually true.

  • 3 Sylvanas HD cinematics in 3 Expansions
  • 3 Marie sues protagonist which totally compressed and ignored the entire world of Azeroth and their respective characters throughout the game.
  • Forced LGBTrans characters knowing that there is more of inclusion and diversity because of the variety of races that exist throughout Azeroth.
  • and a dubious ending in the 9.1 character that the company wants us to empathize with after it is almost killing the lore of the game.

And yet we are anxious that the next patch holds us with so many spoilers that we do not believe your WoWhead and Reddit warning that we are also looking forward to what comes in the next patch.

I don’t think he’s dead yet, but with these retcons that we saw from the disaster in BfA, we doubt that it is serious people who do a good plot without being forced inclusion that really has nothing to do with the lore of the game .

When Ion decided to make raid, or die expansions.

It never went south. The lore has always been the same quality, that of a young adult fantasy.

You were just younger and appreciated the story more in the past.

Deathwing is literally the “Earthwarder”. He has control over the element of earth itself, which means earthquakes, volcanoes, etc. Just like the other dragons have their own mystical qualities to them, his power is being able to do what he did to the planet.

The sword is just a sword once the poisonous magic of the sword is counteracted.
