When did tier sets go away?

It dawned on me why I don’t care about raiding: the lack of tier sets. My motivation to raid in prior expansions was motivated by obtaining tier sets and weapon upgrades. I’ve not been motivated to do raids lately mostly because there doesn’t seem like much of a reason to do so. There is no gear so special in the raids that you can’t get it some other place.

As a returning player, I’d like to know when they stopped doing class tier sets. The primary drive to raid in old xpacs was obtaining class tier sets. They did away with them at some point. Which expansion did they decide to get rid of class tier gear?

start of BFA. Hopefully we’ll see them return in the next expac. Cool class themed armour was my only reason to ever pug too

8.0. The official excuse is that they simply got tired of making Tier Gear. Now each armor class will share a set.

More likely is that they moved artists who used to design tier sets over to designing cash shop mounts and tmog.

I also hope they at some point return class specific tier sets. Always enjoyed them.

I’m raiding pretty casually through heroic now, but really don’t feel any drive to do much more than that with the current system. Usually raid through mythic at some capacity during expansions. Prolly won’t bother this time around.

wasn’t there also something about having to make several sets that all share the same motif as the content in question (despite the fact they’re still doing that)?

i mean, of course that makes sense. a nature-based set dropping in molten core definitely matched.

Just imagine what will get removed next expansion with this current dev team. lol

I guess maybe they were just tierable.

The personal theory here. Too much balancing go into making them. Thank about it you have tons of various level raids and dungeon and have to balance all that. Might have been too much work for them. They are having a really hard time balancing classes and recials as it is.

It’s not just the look, but there would have been a team who designed each class set’s bonus too, and with 12 classes and 36 specs total to firstly think of something to put in, than balance, that is a lot of work.

Tier 19 - 21 was in Legion, you got a 2P and 4P bonus, there alone are 216 bonus’s that need to be worked on from design, planning and implementation all the way through to balancing.

Go back to Tier 1, you had 3 bonus’s per set. Slowly like everything else they have removed bit by bit until there is nothing left, and with the ever increasing number of classes and races I doubt it will ever come back.

If it’s too much work for the current development team they should remove their incompetent developers. if they don’t have any incompetent developers then maybe they should hire a few more competent ones to assist the bogged down developers. Instead, they took the easy and cheap route and removed more stuff from the game.

It’s not just that, you look at where the tiered gear came from back in the day, and how much of it there was. There used to be 8 pieces per set, balancing is one thing, cost is another, but PVE gear has always been that bit better than PVP gear, it is on par or just flat better for PVP and more useful when doing PVE content.

But where do you get it from? Solely raiding and that means players who could not finish raids would have to either deal with dungeon quality gear or try their hand at PVP.

Not being able to obtain everything isn’t a bad thing. When I started the game I used to look at raiders with their awesome looking and powerful gear and want that same stuff. It made me want to try to be a better player, it made me want to join a guild and meet a group of players that I could play with and get to know so I could be part of something like that.

It’s a good mindset to have wanting to simply be a part and be a better player, to get what you can and help those around you.

But it gets to a point that gear is the be all and end all of everything. I ran a normal raid last night while our second tank was out, I needed nothing from there and contemplated running keys instead until he was back so we could finish our heroic, even than I contemplate if I should raid heroic, but if I don’t than the guild won’t improve and therefore I won’t get a chance at progressing mythic raiding.

It’s a balancing act, run content you don’t need, or go find content that will give you better gear but leave everyone behind? I currently sit at 407 iLVL on my tank and am at that point, help others, or leave them behind?

Nothing to do with that, azerite gear is just as much work with at least 6 spec specific traits per spec and a whole bunch of general traits

They used this xpac as a test for removing tier sets in favor of armor that could work together with more pieces overall, supposedly giving the player far more mog options. Though, I don’t really see it yet and am not impressed with the current offerings. I’m expecting that they will go back to what works in the nexpac.

Sucks they are gone.

My guess is they listened to the complaint least expac that people who want to progress and push mythic+ keys were “forced” to raid for the tier.

My guess is it was a consequence of ever-tightening budgets. I wonder what will be the next bit thrown off to lighten the boat?
