Making more and more “addons” into the game itself.
Meter when?
I never used an addon in my life, been here since 2009. Only thing I really wish I had was a meter.

The coolest thing about playing PC games is the fact that players can use mods and add-ons to further customize their experience.
You don’t have to use add-ons, but why wouldn’t you?
There is an add-on for that. Go to Curse forge and look for Details!. It is exactly what you want.
If there was just one add-on I wish they’d build into the base game it’s auto-vendor. I currently have all my add-ons disabled because I want to experience the new UI stuff out of the box for a while. And man selling all my junk by clicking it one at a time, just like the cavemen did it, is so tiresome.
Honestly, never trusted them. Or the sites they come from. I wont even visit sites like Wowhead. Just wont.
I can understand your aversion to add-ons, and it’s wise to be wary of the sources, but I think perhaps you’re being more paranoid than you need to be. Wowhead, for instance, is perfectly safe to visit since all it does is provide information.
At any rate, I use some add-ons, though I wish they’d bake certain add-on features into the game. For the life of me I don’t understand why Blizz hasn’t given us coords yet. Seems like that would be pretty simple, especially since coord add-ons are so extremely popular. What would be really cool is a Z-axis coordinate to describe elevation.
I have been using curseforge for years and manually install my add-ons after my antivirus makes sure the zip files are clean.
Never had a single issue.
Granted, I only really cannot live without weak auras, but there is an add-on for pretty much anything. You might find something that really makes the game more enjoyable for yourself.
I urge you to check it out.
Edit: I also refuse to go to Wowhead, but not because a lack of trust but rather their super aggressive advertising.
Any kind of meters will not be in game due to the fact it will guarantee toxicity.
In my own eyes addons are never safe and I wouldn’t risk downloading something that could be unsafe.
I wish WoW had its own meter built in too. The reason being is that every patch or update presents a chance the addons will not work correctly or the random LUA warning will pop up.
It would just be more convenient to have it all there without an outside source.
It’s not the end of the world (of Warcraft) to download and update addons but eh. Could be better if it’s all there in one spot.
That’s already in the game by the addons anyway, don’t see the difference. If anything, might be useful to help newer players improve or people to see they are falling behind without others having to tell them.
I completely disagree. I find modding to be really annoying and time consuming to the point that by the time I finish modding, I don’t even really want to play the game anymore.
I grab the mods that I absolutely must have to play the game and not be screamed at by gatekeeping jerks in the game. The more of those that can be added to the base client, the better.
Yes, managing add-ons can be a chore. It is why I generally use only a couple.
Also, it can be a real pain when a new patch drops and you’re sitting there waiting for updated mods.
I largely use the default UI.
However, I think that if a player hasn’t checked out add-ons they should cause they might find something that really makes the game more enjoyable for themselves.
If they don’t like them that is cool too, but I think it is worth trying out.
Damage Meters are a weird thing.
Using them is basically standard practice in PvE-Centric MMOs. Even ones that don’t technically support addons. It’s weird to have a game with performance checks in upper end content with NO way to tell h ow you’re performing as an individual. And beyond that, competition between peers is fun to a lot of people. It provides a reason to keep farming content that you’ve already progressed through.
But there will always be people who misuse meters, or who care way too much about how other people are performing in content where it’s not causing problems. So I understand why devs are hesitant to fully embrace it and bake it into the game itself.
Maybe a personal version could be added at some point as a sort of middle ground at least?
Ad-Block
I forget how ad-intensive Wowhead is lol
The Internet has ads? Huh. I guess I really am spoiled by my ad blocker.
YES and so so so many games have “sell junk” in one click, how is WoW really this far behind the times?
FFXIV disallowed one because it created too much toxicity. I think that it being an addon in WoW is enough. I totally understand why you would want one and I would support it if it only showed your DPS etc. But I fear an addon that tracked other players would just make for more drama than it is worth to implement.
You can literally read the source code of the addon…
I do use an add blocker. It is because of sites like wowhead that I have to use one.
It’s a matter of principle for me. I don’t use wowhead for anything because I completely disagree with how they utilize advertisements. I don’t want to support them in even the slightest way.
That said, I don’t want that to derail the thread. Mods can be great and I encourage players to check them out if they have never used them.
I have to tell you that meters can be a blessing and a curse. It’s always great to get that feedback about what you’re doing but I don’t like seeing what other people are doing sometimes. It really puts a damper on things tbh.
I’d rather not know that there’s a lock in my group doing less damage than the healer.
It’s a fair point. It’s not like they can’t track it. We see Damage and healing at the end of every BG.
But I’m sure the forums would explode about Blizzard promoting toxicity, war on casuals… etc etc. the usual.
